A breakfast show radio DJ has shared a health update from hospital after undergoing emergency surgery following a major heart attack and promises he’s on the mend
Heart 80s DJ Simon Beale has revealed that he was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after suffering a heart attack. The 53-year-old said he is generally healthy and therefore didn’t think he was having a heart attack at first.
Simon, who hosts the breakfast slot on Heart 80s, shared a black and white picture of himself to Instagram. In the picture he was attached to several wires and in a hospital bed.
He revealed that three weeks ago, he was walking his dog when he had a heart attack. “Even when it was happening, I was trying to convince myself ‘it can’t be a heart attack’,” he wrote in the caption.

“I’m 53, never smoked, do 15,000 steps a day and eat averagely healthily. And yet, I couldn’t deny the paralysing pain across my chest, so I phoned 999.”
According to the NHS, the best ways to prevent a heart attack are to stick to healthy diet, avoiding too many fats and salts, to exercise regularly, avoid smoking, limiting alcohol intake and manage your blood pressure. But it is important to note that heart attacks can still happen, even if you live a very healthy lifestyle. If you think you are having a heart attack, you should call the emergency services immediately.
“Within a couple of hours, I’d had two stents fitted in the main artery at the front of my heart, which was completely blocked,” Simon continued. “I’d gone from a normal Monday (work, shopping, walking the dog) to being blue-lighted in an ambulance, having life-saving surgery and starting the long road to recovery, wired up to numerous monitors.”
He added that he felt “grateful” for the people around him: “It’s obviously been a massive shock but it’s also made me even more grateful, not just for life itself, but also for the incredible people around me.”
In a sweet addition, he also called the NHS “phenomenal” and said he got “exceptional” care. “The NHS were (and are) phenomenal. The care I received was exceptional and I am beyond thankful to every doctor, nurse, consultant, specialist and hospital worker who looked after me for 8 nights. They saved my life. They are true heroes.
“My family, who dropped everything to be there for me; friends who phoned, messaged and have done whatever they can to help practically; and my work family at Heart & Global (as well as the award teams I was due to work with) who have been overwhelmingly kind, caring, considerate and thoughtful. Thank you so much.”
He added: “I’m now recovering at home, getting used to a cocktail of medication and a whole new diet, taking each day as it comes. I’ve still got a way to go, but I AM on the mend and slowly making progress, hoping to be back at work soon. BTW, the irony of the radio station I work for is not lost on me.”
