Rangers finally confirm new manager after dramatic Steven Gerrard twist

By staff20 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Danny Rohl has been announced as the new head coach of Rangers despite initially withdrawing from a process which has also involved Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat

Rangers have unveiled Danny Rohl as their new head coach, bringing an end to the club’s search for a successor to Russell Martin.

The Scottish giants axed Martin at the start of this month after the former Southampton boss oversaw just one win from seven league games. Speculation over his successor has been rife in the weeks since his departure with Rohl, previously of Sheffield Wednesday, ruling himself out of the running last week.

But after talks with former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat collapsed over the weekend, Rohl, 36, has now been officially confirmed as the club’s new head coach, signing a contract until 2027.

Speaking after confirmation of his new job, Rohl said: “It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of head coach at such an incredible club, recognised around the world.

“I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club.

“The expectations here are clear. The fans want to see results now – my mentality and experience is to think in exactly the same way and I have belief in the players that we can achieve this.”

There have been plenty of twists and turns in the race for the Ibrox vacancy and it had seemed as though Steven Gerrard was primed to make a stunning return to the club he guided to the Scottish title back in 2021 in the days following Martin’s exit.

However, the Liverpool legend would withdraw from the running after a late change of heart with Rangers instead holding talks with Rohl and Muscat.
