Rare but simple road sign is confusing motorists and causing fines

By staff4 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Drivers may be caught out by this particular and seemingly simple sign and leading Brits to be getting unexpected fines, experts say, but here’s how to not be caught out and make sure you stay aware

All drivers, experienced and inexperienced still get confused about road signs and the rarer ones out there often catch most drivers out. Those that had to sit the theory test may be more prepared but many did not need to take this test before they started driving.

This peculiar road sign, a blank red-bordered circle, is confusing Brits and leading them to be receiving fines, experts warned. The sign means ‘no vehicles allowed except bicycles being pushed’, as stated by the Highway Code.

Experts at RevMonkeyUK shared their thoughts: “It’s one of the most misunderstood signs on British roads. Most assume it’s incomplete or just decorative, but it marks a strict ‘no vehicles’ zone. That includes everything from cars and motorbikes to mopeds and electric scooters. So much so that often highways agency has to amend the sign to include text to avoid confusion.”

The Highway Code states: “Signs with red circles are mostly prohibitive”. Sometimes extra detail will be added below the sign which would clearly state, “no vehicles” but this is not always the case, so it is important to stay alert. Some added warning may be ’10am – 4pm except for access’ or something of that sort.”

There are many signs across the UK but the main areas are:

  • Red borders which are used to provide compulsory instructions. For example: speed limits or a warning.
  • Blue signs which are for instructions like ‘turn left’ or ‘Cycles only’.
  • Green signs are to give directions or information such as, ‘A-roads’.
  • Circular signs give orders, usually what you are not supposed to do.
  • Triangular signs are warnings of potential hazards and dangers, like a sharp bend or wild animals.
  • Rectangular signs are for giving information, like parking information.

If you fail to comply with mandatory road signs then penalties can include a £100 fine and three points on your licence. RevMonkeyUK experts highlight: “We’ve heard from riders and drivers who’ve unknowingly crossed into restricted zones just because they didn’t realise what the sign meant. It’s rare, but it can result in fines or penalty points if you’re caught. It’s one to watch out for.”

They also stressed how urban areas are now implementing more vehicle restrictions to allow for more pedestrian zones and reduce emissions, understanding road signage is now much more crucial.
