Rasmus Hojlund closes in on Man Utd exit but Red Devils set to make huge loss

Rasmus Hojlund is closing in on a move away from Manchester United this summer, with Napoli set to sign the striker on loan after Romelu Lukaku suffered a serious injury

Rasmus Hojlund is reportedly closing in on a move to Napoli, with Manchester United set to take a huge loss on the striker. Hojlund joined United from Atalanta back in 2023 for a fee of around £72million.

However, he has struggled to make much of an impact at Old Trafford, managing just 26 goals in 95 appearances across all competitions. United have strengthened their attack significantly this summer and Hojlund has been deemed surplus to requirements by Ruben Amorim.

Hojlund has been left out of the squad for United’s first two Premier League games this season, with the likes of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee ahead of him in the pecking order.

And a report from Sky Sports Italy claim that Hojlund is inching closer to joining Napoli on loan with an option to buy that will become mandatory if certain conditions are met. The report states that an agreement has been reached with the player and there are ‘only a few details remaining to be finalised’.

The deal is worth a total of €45m (£39m), which would represent a huge £33m loss for the Red Devils. Napoli have been desperate to sign a new striker ever since Romelu Lukaku picked up a thigh injury in pre-season which is set keep him out of action for several months.

Hojlund will be hoping he can find some form in Italy, having insisted during United’s pre-season tour of the US that he wanted to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford. “I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens,” he said.

“I’m still very young. I think people forget that sometimes. I’m only 22. Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22 (like Erling Haaland ).

“But I’ve learned a lot, I think you can see in my game. I’m starting to develop and become even better in the basics. Now it’s just about for me to sharpen myself and I’ve done very well in the pre-season so far.

“Just focusing on continuing that. Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I’m more than ready.

“I’m feeling sharp, so I’m welcoming everything that comes. I think it’s good with competition and it only sharpens the team.”
