Boots is selling kefir pills, each capsule contains five billion live cultures and could help you lower cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels
Boots now offers a 31p pill that could help lower cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure. Each capsule, packed with five billion live kefir cultures, is gut-friendly.
Kefir, a fermented dairy drink, is loaded with billions of live cultures, a substantial amount of calcium, and a rich protein source. A pack of 30 capsules costs £9.37, which works out to 31p per tablet. These pills do not have the thick texture or sour taste typically associated with kefir.
Studies have shown that kefir can help regulate blood pressure, manage cholesterol levels, and improve triglyceride levels in the blood. A thorough review of randomised controlled trials suggested that kefir might reduce fasting blood sugar and insulin levels.
It has also been found to decrease systolic blood pressure in individuals with hypertension significantly. Another study suggested that kefir could help control other diabetes-related factors, such as insulin resistance and blood pressure.
The probiotics in kefir can affect gut bacteria by producing hormones that increase insulin secretion and promote glucose absorption in muscle. Kefir may also reduce inflammatory cytokines, which can contribute to inflammation and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, reports Surrey Live. However, more research is needed to substantiate some of these claims.
In a study involving animals, hypertensive rats were given kefir for 60 days, resulting in a significant drop in their blood pressure. It’s also suggested that kefir could help lessen the impact of metabolic syndrome, a condition that can increase heart disease risk.
As for cholesterol reduction, kefir is packed with probiotic bacteria that aid in lowering LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol and triglyceride levels. A 2023 study discovered that traditional kefir reduced LDL cholesterol and inflammation markers in individuals with high LDL cholesterol.
Elevated levels of cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar can pose significant health risks. They may heighten your chances of developing heart disease, experiencing a stroke, and facing other serious medical issues.
It is important to remember food supplements should never replace a varied diet or healthy lifestyle. Boots kefir capsules are not suitable for children under 12.
Before taking them, check with your doctor or pharmacist to ensure they’re right for you, particularly if you’re on medication, have a medical condition, are breastfeeding, or are pregnant. While the research on kefir is encouraging, it’s not a miracle cure.
The most effective ways to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels include regular exercise, drinking plenty of water, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding processed, fatty foods.

Numerous studies have highlighted the benefits of probiotics and foods rich in them for easing digestive issues like bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, and more. Regular consumption of kefir could also assist in weight loss.
Its high protein content can keep you satiated for longer periods, potentially reducing your overall food intake and aiding weight loss efforts. Kefir is brimming with beneficial live bacteria and yeast that your immune system usually keeps in check to protect against infections.
However, if you’re on immunosuppressants that weaken your immune response, drinking kefir could heighten the risk of illness.
