Remo Girone dead: Equalizer star and beloved Italian actor dies after cancer diagnosis

By staff4 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Italian actor Remo Girone, famed for his roles as a mob boss in La Piovra and as Enzo Ferrari in Ford v Ferrari, has died at 76 from bladder cancer

Italian actor Remo Girone has passed away at the age of 76 following a battle with bladder cancer. The Monte Carlo resident, who died on Friday, October 3, was widely celebrated for his roles in both Italian and international cinema.

Girone gained fame for his portrayal of a mob boss in the iconic mafia TV series La Piovra and earned global recognition playing Enzo Ferrari in the blockbuster Ford v Ferrari.

His career began in 1974 with the film The Antichrist, and he went on to feature in a host of Italian productions, including Father of the Godfathers, Malamore, Breath of Life, and Don’t Stop Me Now.

In addition to his work in Italy, Girone appeared in American films, most notably as Mafia boss Maso Pescatore in the 2016 crime drama Live by Night, starring alongside Ben Affleck.

In 2021, Girone’s remarkable career was celebrated with lifetime achievement awards from both the Venice International Film Festival and the Flaiano Film Festival, recognising more than five decades of work that saw him navigate seamlessly between Italian cinema and Hollywood productions.

Among his later roles, Girone appeared as Cesare Greco in an episode of Killing Eve, demonstrating his continued ability to captivate audiences on the small screen.

In 2019, he took on the high-profile role of Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the legendary Italian luxury sports car company, in the blockbuster film Ford v Ferrari, starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale.

His final on-screen appearance came in 2023 alongside Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 3, cementing his reputation as an actor who remained in demand well into his seventies.

Born in 1948 in Eritrea, East Africa, to Italian parents, Girone returned to Italy to study acting at the prestigious Silvio d’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome.

Over the course of his career, he became a familiar face in both Italian and international productions, moving effortlessly between film and television, and earning acclaim for his performances in dramas, thrillers, and historical epics.

Girone’s personal life was equally fulfilling. He married actress Victoria Zinny in 1982, and together they shared a life rooted in the arts.

He is also survived by his stepchildren, Veronica and Karl, who were an important part of his family life.

Beyond his professional accolades, Girone was remembered for his dedication to his craft, his passion for storytelling, and his ability to bring depth and authenticity to every role he inhabited.
