Remove make-up stains from clothes using 10p trick that takes minutes to do

By staff6 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Make-up stains are some of the hardest to remove, but one cleaning expert has revealed how you can get rid of them in minutes using a cheap product – and it’s so easy

No matter how skilled you are in keeping your clothes spotless, there are certain stains that seem to appear more often than others. If you’re a regular makeup user, you’ll know that these are some of the most stubborn stains to get rid of, as most cosmetics are oil-based and stick to fabrics quite easily.

However, there’s no need to throw away your makeup stained garments and fork out money for replacements. Cleaning gurus swear by an unusual household trick that costs mere pennies and works within minutes.

The solution is shaving cream, which many of us will already have in our bathroom cabinets.

According to the experts at Apartment Therapy, shaving cream will ‘cut through the oil’ and help remove a makeup stain from any piece of clothing when followed by a quick spin in the washing machine.

The process couldn’t be simpler. Just take your stained garment, apply a squirt or two of shaving cream to the stain, and let it soak in for about 10 minutes, reports the Express.

Next, take a clean cloth and start to blot the shaving foam away. Give it a quick rinse with cold water, and you should find that the stain has almost disappeared.

But if it hasn’t, just pop it in the machine as usual, and it should vanish.

Why is shaving foam good for stains?

Shaving cream serves as an effective and gentle way to remove foundation stains from clothes, the experts at Kind Laundry agree.

This works because it can dissolve oils and pigments whilst protecting delicate materials, ensuring your garments remain spotless yet undamaged.

Whilst shaving cream tends to be gentle, always conduct a patch test on a hidden section of the item before attempting to remove the mark.

Be careful with fragile materials such as silk, and if the label states “dry clean only,” visit the experts rather than attempting it yourself.

If you don’t have shaving foam in your bathroom cabinet, you can purchase one for as little as £1 from Boots.

This tin contains enough product to fix multiple stains, meaning you should get at least 10 uses from the one bottle. This is significantly cheaper than replacing stained clothes, so it’s well worth a try.

Likewise, hairspray can be an efficient stain blaster due to its high alcohol concentration, which helps in dissolving stubborn cosmetic marks – particularly from items such as lipstick and foundation.

Apply it gently to the mark, allow five minutes then dab and wash away using cold water. This method performs best on machine-washable materials, so be careful where you spray it.
