Repel rats and deter them from invading your garden with ‘repulsive’ plants

By staff16 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Rats are not only a nuisance but they can also cause damage to crops, plants, and properties. Here are four plants that repel rats and deter them from invading your garden

Rats can wreak havoc on crops and plants, spread lethal diseases to humans and cause property damage. Given their large population, rats are the most common pests you might encounter in your garden or even inside your home. If you suspect a rat infestation, it’s vital to act swiftly and take measures to eliminate them and prevent their return.

But why wait for the problem to arise? You can also take preventative steps to keep these pests out of your garden altogether with advice from the experts at PI Gardening. They suggested that certain herbs and plants “repel rats and discourage them from spending time around your garden”.

Here are some plants you can cultivate in your garden to “get rid of rats”.

1. Peppermint

We all appreciate the refreshing aroma of mint, but rats particularly despise it, reports the Express. Rats “stay away” from the potent smell of peppermint and “will avoid any areas of your garden” where it is grown, according to the experts.

When planted in the ground, mint grows aggressively, so it’s best kept in pots and placed around the plants you want to safeguard.

2. Lemon grass

Lemon grass is a fragrant plant commonly used for cooking, but did you know it can also be used to deter rats from your garden? The experts explained: “The strong citrus smell of lemongrass is unpleasant to rats and can help to keep them away.”

By introducing lemon grass into your garden or positioning it in pots around the area you wish to shield, you can deter rats and other pests such as cats and mice from invading your plants and flower beds – and the best bit is that lemon grass is completely safe and non-toxic for both animals and humans.

3. Sage

Sage emits a robust scent which, although delightful to humans, is overpowering for rodents like rats. The specialists remarked: “Sage has a strong smell that rats dislike. This herb can also help to keep them away from your garden.”

Many gardeners choose to place sage near the plants that are under attack, forming an effective and very economical barrier.

4. Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums are vibrant flowers that release a powerful odour that is unappealing to rats. The gardening gurus noted that this is because these blooms contain pyrethrum, “a natural insecticide that can also repel rats”.

These popular blossoms are readily available at your local garden centre, and you can plant them either outdoors or inside your house.
