Police have searched two homes in Leicester following reports that human remains were alleged buried at a property in the 1970s – locals shared their ‘shock’ as a 86-year-old was arrested

Residents on a street at the centre of an investigation into alleged reports of buried human remains have revealed their shock.

Police descended on two homes in the Leicester area after reports that human remains were allegedly buried at a home in Wolverton Road in the 1970s. Leicestershire Police have launched an investigations into the worrying report and revealed an 86-year-old woman was arrested as parts of their inquiries, but she was later released on bail. Cops centred their search around two homes on the streets off Narborough Road, in Leicester, where officers said they were conducting “thorough searches” of both properties.

Officers first searched a home on Wolverton Road “following a report human remains may be buried there”. A resident on that road, Deepshikha, 23, talking to LeicestershireLive said: “It’s really shocking. We came home from work and there were lots of police. It is scary.”

Another local revealed cops had been at the site for several days before the “shock” news was revealed to the public. Ellen said: “[The police] started appearing a few days ago. We didn’t know what was happening.

“We asked the officer if the people that lived there were okay and he told us they were.” She added: “There’s always something going on around here. We have stabbings and stuff but nothing like this.”

Miroslav Oracko, 30, who has lived in the area since 2017, said: “It’s a bit strange knowing there’s [allegedly] been remains in the garden. You don’t hear about this often so it comes as a big shock.”

Another local said police several days ago had told her they were “conducting an investigation at the property” and she said: “It’s a shock to think that something like that has happened, I wouldn’t have thought in my wildest dreams something like that was going on, I thought it was to do with drugs.”

Another property on Dumbleton Avenue, also off Narborough Road, was also searched on Saturday as cops arrested an 86-year-old pensioner in connection with the investigation and she has since been released on bail.

Detective Inspector Neil Holden, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit’s major crime team, is leading the investigation. He said: “This is a very complex and sensitive investigation which will take time.

“I appreciate the news of this investigation will be concerning to the local community and I must emphasise the investigation is in its very early stages as we continue to establish the full circumstances of the report.

“Given the serious nature of the allegations which have been made, a scene preservation has been put in place at both addresses to allow officers to carry out a thorough search and secure any evidence that could help our enquiries.

“Officers from the West Leicester Neighbourhood Policing Area remain in the area to provide further reassurance to the local community.

“Please speak to us if you have any information that you think could help us. I would also ask our communities to avoid the sharing of misinformation and speculation. Please only share information which is known to be true.”
