‘Revive’ hard towels with a 2-ingredient washing method – not vinegar or bicarb

By staff13 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

If you’ve noticed your towels are feeling a bit stiff after a few washes, you’re not alone – but there’s a simple way to make them fluffy again using just two natural ingredients in one wash

Washing becomes significantly more challenging when dealing with particular items requiring special care, such as towels. Usually, after two or three washes, households will discover that their towels can become stiff.

This most commonly occurs due to accumulated soapy residue and when towels are excessively dried. Whilst some individuals enjoy the texture of rough towels, it’s not to everyone’s taste.

To soften and return them to their plush condition after just one wash, there exists a straightforward and natural method that doesn’t depend on vinegar or bicarbonate of soda.

The Instagram account @thecleangroup revealed a tried-and-tested technique they endorse for softening rigid towels and “it’s not vinegar or bicarbonate,” reports the Express.

They wrote in the post: “Airbnb towels get used and washed far more than your average household towels, but this is a secret we learned whilst working for an Airbnb host.

“I can 100 percent confirm that these two ingredients will restore all the original fluffiness to your towels. It’s not what you might think – no bicarb or white vinegar.”

They maintained that the solution lies in soda crystals and tea tree oil.

Outlining why these two products prove effective for this purpose, the experts explained: “Because soda crystals are very alkaline they break down the residues left by your detergent that build up on your towels over time.

“Tea tree oil is antibacterial – so it is a natural disinfectant. It also removes trapped moisture build up in the fibres helping to make your towels 100 percent fluffy again.”

The experts recommend using liquid soda crystals for this tip as it’s “much easier to use and store”.

To start, add a capful of your detergent to the drawer, or if you’re using liquid pods, pop them into the drum.

Next, sprinkle a few drops of tea tree oil in the drawer and set your washing machine to run a 60-degree cycle.

Once the cycle is finished, give your towels a good shake to loosen the fibres and leave them to dry on an airer with a dehumidifier.

If you’re using a tumble dryer, pop them in for just 10 minutes on a low heat.
