Ricky Hatton’s brother pays tribute to boxing icon after tragic death aged 46

Tributes from the boxing world have poured in since it was announced that Ricky Hatton had died at the age of 46 on Sunday and his brother Matthew has posted in memory of his sibling

Matthew Hatton has paid tribute to his brother, Ricky Hatton, after it was announced that the legendary British boxer had passed away at the age of 46 on Sunday.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a body had been found at Hatton’s address and that the death was not being treated as suspicious. Tributes have flooded in from around the world in honour of ‘The Hitman’, who was one of British boxing’s most adored and accomplished stars.

Hatton’s brother, Matthew, shared a number of pictures of himself and Ricky alongside in a social media post on Sunday night with the caption: “I love you Richard. See you on the other side X”.

Manchester City joined others in paying tribute to Hatton, who has a huge City fan. Both they and Manchester United honoured the former world champion before Sunday’s Manchester derby with a minute’s applause.

“Manchester City are devastated to learn Ricky Hatton has passed away, aged 46,” the club wrote in a statement prior to the game.

“Ricky was one of City’s most loved and revered supporters, who will always be remembered for a glittering boxing career that saw him win world titles at welterweight and light-welterweight.

“Everyone at the Club would like to send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time. We can confirm there will be a minute’s appreciation ahead of today’s game against Manchester United.”

City manager Pep Guardiola thanked United fans for their part in a moment which he described as one of the most intense in his time at The Etihad. “I have been ten years and I don’t remember one so intense like today. Thank you so much to Manchester United fans,” he said.

“I know he was a world champion in boxing. There are no words that can contain the pain that the family can feel right now.

“We are close and I know how incredible he was as a Manchester City fan. He could live the good moments and the bad moments. The moment of silence was unbelievable, I will always remember it. A massive, massive City fan.”
