Robert Sanchez has issued a heartfelt apology following his red card during Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League. The Blues endured a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, with Trevoh Chalobah scoring a consolation for Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Nevertheless, the defender’s late strike proved insufficient to overturn first-half strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro for the home side. Sanchez received his marching orders from referee Peter Bankes just five minutes into the match, prompting Maresca to introduce Filip Jorgensen whilst substituting Estevao Willian and bringing on Tosin Adarabioyo for Pedro Neto in a tactical double change.

Shortly after the final whistle, Sanchez turned to social media to express his regret over the red card in the early minutes of Chelsea’s defeat in Manchester, reports football.london.

“On me today guys, big sorry for that, team put a massive effort in the second half but couldn’t get there,” Sanchez posted on his Instagram story on Saturday night.

Sanchez will now face a one-match suspension after receiving his red card for preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity, with Bryan Mbeumo attempting to win possession before being tackled by the Chelsea goalkeeper..

The shot-stopper will be absent for the Carabao Cup third-round tie against Lincoln City at Sincil Bank on Tuesday evening, with the ban including both the League Cup and Premier League competitions.

Jorgensen is anticipated to get the nod for Chelsea when they travel to face Lincoln during the week, whilst Gaga Slonina is an alternative between the sticks for Maresca. Sanchez’s ban will be lifted in time for the goalkeeper to be available for Chelsea’s upcoming Premier League match against Brighton next weekend.
