Tennis legend Roger Federer is the latest sports star to have become a billionaire, with the 44-year-old’s wealth continuing to grow after his retirement in 2019. Federer won 20 Grand Slam singles titles during his career, a figure that has only been surpassed by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

He was also the sport’s highest-paid player until he retired and Federer has now become a billionaire, according to Forbes, with the Swiss superstar reportedly having a net worth of $1.1billion (£813million).

It is estimated that Federer has banked more than double the earnings of Djokovic and Nadal from endorsements, appearances and business interests. One of the biggest reasons behind Federer’s newfound billionaire status is his stake in Swiss shoe and apparel brand On.

Federer partnered with the company in 2019 and owns an estimated three per cent stake in the company, which was floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021 and is now valued at close to $15bn (£11.1bn).

As a result, Federer’s stakes is said to be worth more than $375m (£277.3m). Speaking back in 2023, On’s then co-CEO Marc Maurer said: “Roger was the accelerator.

“We basically wanted to open the door, and we were clear that tennis is the next sport. We were very fortunate that Roger embarked on that mission together with us.”

Federer also banked around $1bn (£739m) in pre-tax earnings from his lucrative sponsorship agreements with Lindt, Mercedes-Benz, Rolex, Moet & Chandon, Nike and Uniqlo.

Federer is just the eight sportsperson to become a billionaire, with Forbes estimating that fellow tennis player Ion Tiriac became the first in 2007 thanks to his investments in real estate, car dealerships and financial services.

Basketball legends Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and LeBron James also make the list, along with footballers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and golfer Tiger Woods.

Former basketball star Junior Bridgeman is also estimated to have been worth $1.4billion (£1bn) when he passed away in March.
