James Maddison shushed Roy Keane after scoring in Tottenham’s win over Manchester United earlier this month and the popular pundit has now responded in typical fashion

Roy Keane couldn’t resist one final dig at James Maddison after the Tottenham star hit back at criticism from the Manchester United legend.

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s clash with United earlier this month, Keane was critical of Maddison.

“We saw James Maddison at Tamworth, he was taken off! Tamworth are non-league,” he said “People say, ‘Maddison’s the man’, but when is he going to step up to the plate? He got relegated with Leicester and [looks like] with Spurs. Maddison isn’t bad but if you think he’s going to come back and get Spurs top six, you’re in cuckoo land.

“He’s a talented player, but if you’re a player in the Spurs dressing room and he’s back in the squad, you wouldn’t be looking and going, ‘James is back today – we’re going to be fine!’.”

Maddison ended up scoring the only goal of the game as Spurs beat United 1-0 and he celebrated with a ‘shush’ celebration that was aimed at Keane.

Maddison also poked fun at Keane’s comments with a post on TikTok and Keane has now responded on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet. When asked about Maddison’s celebration by Gary Neville, Keane admitted he was pleased to see it – but had one very pointed comment to make.

“Good on him,” he said. “Absolutely no problem (with it). I still go with what I said, I don’t think he does enough of that. But when he scored, I was at home with my cup of tea and went ‘Good on you’. No problem, people have a go at you, you answer them back.

“I was hoping he’d do the same the other day but he was a sub against Ipswich so…” After Neville, Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright and Jill Scott burst into laughter at Keane’s comments, he then turned to look down the camera and mimicked Maddison’s trademark darts celebration.

“Just keeping doing your stuff James because you’ll never f***ing win,” Wright joked.

Keane then noted that Maddison did get an assist after coming off the bench against Ipswich, with Spurs winning that match 4-1 thanks to a brace from Brennan Johnson and goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Djed Spence.

Maddison then captained Spurs in their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday and he will be hoping to make an impact when Tottenham travel to AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash next week.
