Roy Keane tears into Ruben Amorim comments after Man Utd loss – ‘He should be raging’

Ruben Amorim defended his Manchester United team after their 3-0 loss in the Manchester derby but Roy Keane felt the Old Trafford chief should have been angry with their display

Roy Keane was not impressed to hear Ruben Amorim defend his Manchester United team after watching them lose comprehensively against Manchester City in the derby.

The Red Devils were beaten 3-0 by Pep Guardiola’s side, who paid a fitting tribute to boxing legend and huge City fan Ricky Hatton following the sad news of his death earlier in the day. Phil Foden opened the scoring in the 18th minute before Erling Haaland notched twice after the break as City finished the derby in cruise control to condemn Amorim and United to another sobering afternoon.

Despite an underwhelming performance, Amorim refused to throw his players under the bus post-match, telling Sky Sports that he felt everybody in the team was giving their maximum and absolved them of blame for the result. Keane, though, was of a different opinion and said the Portuguese coach should be “raging” after watching his side lose to in the derby.

“He said there he’s not too angry, he’s happy with the effort…they have lost 3-0 in a derby game. You should be fuming, you should be raging,” the Sky Sports pundit said.

“He is talking about moments, but football games are decided by moments. It always seems to be moments of the opposition than United at this moment in time, and I am including teams like Grimsby by the way.

“He should be raging, I like managers who are emotional but I like my managers to show anger as well. I just couldn’t imagine being in a dressing room after losing a derby game 3-0 and everyone going ‘did we all try?'”

Defeat against City in the derby means United have banked just four points from their opening four Premier League games. Amorim offered a defence of his team when he was asked where he felt United are right now post-match, though, saying: “We play against one coach that won seven Premier League titles and we are building things, trying to fight against these teams. I am not going to defend myself, it’s always the same question, trying to protect myself. We need to do better.

“If I look to the game, last year we draw and won against City and today we were a little bit better but in the small details it was clearly not goof enough. We are building things but of course we need to win.

“I’m not happier. I didn’t see one player in my team not giving the maximum. The rest is with me. The disappointment sometimes I feel we could run more, but I didn’t have that feeling today. It’s my fault, not their fault and I am fine with that.

“I know it’s hard on our fans but again, I cannot point to one player [about lack of] effort. With game intelligence we can improve but that is my fault and we can improve.”
