Ruben Amorim has had to contend without Mason Mount for much of his time at Manchester United as the ex-Chelsea star has been plagued with injuries since arriving at Old Trafford in 2023
Ruben Amorim and Frank Lampard have both spoken glowingly about Mason Mount’s attitude – with the struggling Manchester United star in the midst of injury hell.
The England international made the shock move to Old Trafford from boyhood club Chelsea in the summer of 2023, with Erik ten Hag splashing out £55million for the midfielder. Mount had established himself as a key player for the Blues under Lampard, who handed the 26-year-old his senior debut for the Premier League giants during his first stint in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Well aware of Mount’s capabilities, given he worked with him at Derby County prior to their reunion at Chelsea, the now Coventry City boss revealed that he saw the same competitive drive he had as a player in Mount’s makeup. Speaking on the podcast EFL Unfiltered, the 46-year-old said: “I have this real professional drive and if I see something and I want to do it, I’ll do it.
“If I can’t do it, I want to do it. If I do it well, I want to do it better. I’ve always had that and I have taken it into management. It becomes a bit more taxing as you get older as well. It’s a bit more tiring. When you’ve got loads of energy in your 20s, it’s like I’m going to the moon.
“Then when you’re in your 40s, you have days where you go: ‘I need a day off’. But the drive in me is still there, it just changes a bit I guess. I love seeing it in players, there’s some players that naturally have it. I always felt that with Mason Mount, working with him as a young player, I could see the look in his eye.”
It’s an attribute of Mount’s that Amorim has also taken a keen liking to, despite not being able to witness it much on the football pitch due to his struggles with injury. The midfielder has made just 32 appearances for United since signing, with 12 of those games coming this season.
He last appeared for the club in what was a 14-minute cameo against Manchester City back in December, where he was forced off with a thigh injury that’s kept him on the sidelines ever since.
In spite of his lack of availability, the Portuguese boss raved about Mount’s attitude as he told club media: “Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid. You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.”
Mount, who has scored just one goal for United, is understood to be making good progress in his injury recovery, but Amorim is yet to confirm when he’ll be back.
