Ruben Amorim could be forced to dip into the transfer market in January if he is to help his Manchester United team recover from a tough spell and climb the table
Manchester United’s January transfer business could have a huge bearing on their finishing position, and Fulham star Antonee Robinson might be a real problem-solver for head coach Ruben Amorim if a deal can be agreed.
With United forced to spend millions to part ways with Amorim’s predecessor Erik ten Hag, questions remain over how much money there will be to spend this winter. They might end up needing to be creative with their purchases in order to leave themselves with a squad capable ot playing to their new boss’ preferences.
Left wing-back has been a problem area, and one which may well need fixing if Amorim is able to continue with his preferred 3-4-3. Neither Luke Shaw nor Tyrell Malacia has been reliably fit, leaving the naturally right-sided Diogo Dalot to deputise down the left.
Various reports have suggested Robinson is among those being considered after another impressive season with Fulham. Not only might the American international be able to provide a reliable presence down the left – he has the tools to contribute going forward as well as defensively.
Robinson, 27, has seven assists in the Premier League this term. That takes him up to 10 for the calendar year – four more than any other Premier League defender in the same period.
Four of those assists came during the month of December. a period in which he has captained Fulham on multiple occasions. He laid on Alex Iwobi’s clincher in the 3-1 win over Brighton and provided both goals in a 2-2 draw with league leaders Liverpool, before rounding off the year by feeding Harry Wilson to put Fulham’s ahead against Bournemsilvouth.
It wasn’t quite enough for victory, though. Marco Silva’s team led twice against Andoni Iraola’s men, but Dango Ouattara’s late goal allowed the visitors to escape with a point.

Amorim and United sit 14th ahead of their match against Newcastle on Monday night, and won’t be able to end the weekend in the top half of the table. They could still climb to 11th, though, if they beat Eddie Howe’s side and Brentford lose to Arsenal on New Year’s Day.
“We have to fight against everything, because our supporters are always there. But they are tired of this moment,” said the Portuguese, who is aiming to avoid a third straight league defeat after losses against Bournemouth and Wolves.
“We have to expect that any play from Newcastle near our box is going to make the stadium nervous and our players have to cope with that. It is a very strong team, very fast, with a lot of pace and a lot of time with the same coach. We want to be competitive and try to win the game. That is all.”
