Ruben Amorim gives Man Utd transfer update after Matheus Cunha all but confirms move

Matheus Cunha has emerged as Manchester United’s top summer transfer target with the Wolverhampton Wanderers star moving closer to completing a £62.5m Old Trafford switch

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim kept his cards close to his chest when asked about the club’s pursuit of Matheus Cunha. Wolves striker Cunha is set for a medical ahead of a £62.5million Old Trafford switch, but some formalities still need to be ironed out.

Cunha has made clear he is a fan of Amorim, who won titles with Sporting CP before moving to the Premier League. In a recent interview with Brazilian media, he all but confirmed his move when speaking about the United boss.

“Talking about him is easy, I think he’s a great coach and I wish him nothing but the best,” Cunha told CNN Brasil (via the Daily Mail). “I hope he conquers the world as he did Portugal,”

When asked about linking up with the Portuguese, he added: “Well, God willing, we’ll always do our best to help,” though Amorim is in nio mood to jump the gun.

“You have to wait for that,” Amorim told reporters during United’s post-season tour. “I won’t confirm anything. I have no news. We will see. There will be some changes”

United fans were given a reminder of why their pursuit of a goalscorer like Cunha has accelerated. Amorim’s side began their tour of Malaysia with a friendly against ASEAN All Stars, but fell to a 1-0 defeat in Kuala Lumpur.

Rasmus Hojlund and Chido Obi were given 45 minutes each in the game, with Joshua Zirkzee not involved after only recently returning from injury. Hojlund and Zirkzee scored just seven league goals between them, while teenager Obi only started his first Premier League match in May.

Speaking after the game, Amorim also took some small positives – including predicting more minutes for young midfielder Sekou Kone. The 19-year-old, who joined from Malian side Guidars last summer, has made Premier League matchday squads on several occasions without making a senior competitive appearance.

“The important thing is no injuries, with this weather and everything that we did to arrive here in this day,” Amorim said. “But, again, it’s not an excuse. We should perform better.

“We have to control the minutes of everybody. He [Kone] will play more in the next game on Friday. He did quite well but all the young kids tried, that is the most important thing. They want to play more but we have to rotate everybody, so everybody can play. They did well.”
