Ruben Amorim admitted he does not know if he will remain in charge of Manchester United after the international break. Under-pressure Amorim faces a must-win game against Burnley today, following United’s humiliating EFL Cup exit to League Two Grimsby in midweek.

United have taken a solitary point from their opening two Premier League games to stand 16th in the table, with Amorim conceding there can be no guarantees over his future after such a poor start. Asked if was sure he would still be United boss after the upcoming international break, Amorim said: “I don’t know what is going to happen, but that is my idea.

“But again, I’m not going to promise you nothing about what is going to be the future. But I’m the manager of Manchester United and I think that is not going to change.”

In the immediate aftermath of the penalty shot-out defeat at Blundell Park, Amorin said his players had “spoken really loudly about what they want” with their abject performance. That was widely interpreted as Amorim suggesting the display showed his players had lost faith in him and his methods, after nine months in charge.

But Amorim said his remarks were made in the heat of the moment and not to be taken at face value, admitting he allowed emotion to get the better of him following the huge upset.

“Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to defend my players,” said Amorim. “Sometimes I want to quit Sometimes I want o be here for 20 years, sometimes I love my players sometimes I don’t want to be here with them.

“This is my way of doing things and I’m going to be like that. I was frustrated and annoyed. I know you have a lot of experienced players saying I should be more calm. But I’m going to be who I am and in that moment I was really upset and disappointed.

“I felt we had a really good pre-season. We played badly for 30 minutes against Fulham. So I was really disappointed in everything.”
