Ruben Amorim questioned over ‘staggering’ Man Utd decision – ‘I don’t get it’

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim named Benjamin Sesko on the bench for a second consecutive game after signing the striker from RB Leipzig earlier this summer

Ruben Amorim’s decision to start Benjamin Sesko on the bench for Manchester United’s trip to Fulham has been slammed by Andy Gray, who says he is “flabbergasted” that the striker isn’t starting games.

United headed into the summer transfer window desperate for a new No 9 after both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggled for goals last season and paid big money to bring Sesko to Old Trafford. The Slovenia international, 22, has been eased into life in the Premier League, though, and came off the bench against Arsenal last week and in United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday.

Mason Mount started the game in attack alongside Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. But while Cunha and Mbeumo have been thrust straight into the team after big money moves of their own, Amorim is taking a different approach with Sesko – and Gray simply doesn’t get why.

“I don’t get it. I am flabbergasted,” he told beIN SPORTS. “I moved to clubs for big money during my career and trust me, I didn’t need three or four weeks to understand the team.

“Sesko is an international footballer, played in the Bundesliga, he cost more than £70m… are you telling me he can’t go into that Manchester United team as a centre forward and play there? Come on! I must have missed something, seriously.

“If you’re a United fan, you want Sesko up there with Mbeumo and Cunha. He’s had a pre-season in Germany, he’s fit and ready to go. I’m staggered, I don’t get it.”

Owen Hargreaves, meanwhile, fears that signing Sesko hasn’t necessarily solved United’s issues up front. The former Manchester United midfielder also thinks the goalkeeper position could become an issue after Altay Bayindir started the Fulham game ahead of Andre Onana, who was left out of the squad that lost to Arsenal last weekend.

“I love Mbeumo, I love Cunha, Bruno had a bad game today, but my biggest worry is the goalkeeper situation isn’t addressed and the striker situation isn’t addressed,” Hargreaves told Premier League Productions.

“I have never seen a team win without top players in those two positions. Maybe they are going to address that in the next week. But goalkeeper, striker, he has to address.

“The two in behind in Mbeumo and Cunha are fantastic but the one at the top and at the back, they need to address as soon as possible. You look at the fixtures, Burnley at home you expect to win but [Manchester] City and Chelsea are really difficult.”
