Manchester United delivered an embarrassing first-half performance against Everton before fighting back to claim a draw, but Ruben Amorim has admitted he is struggling to turn his side around
Ruben Amorim has worryingly admitted that he has no idea how to fix Manchester United’s inconsistency.
United fell two goals behind against Everton after putting in a dreadful first-half performance. They failed to match the Toffees’ desire and did not have a shot on target until the 70th minute.
But that shot saw Bruno Fernandes fire in a brilliant free-kick to inspire an unlikely turnaround. Fernandes also took the set-piece that led to Manuel Ugarte volleying in a dramatic equaliser with 10 minutes to go.
United were left in debt to referee Andy Madley controversially overturning his decision to award Everton a penalty deep into stoppage time. While the fightback may have boosted morale, Amorim’s side remain 15th in the Premier League.
They have now failed to win any of their last four top-flight games, with Saturday’s draw their sole point in that run. In a remarkable admission, Amorim has now admitted he has no idea how to fix United’s punishing inconsistency.
“I don’t know what I need to do to bring more consistency. If I knew, I would change it,” he said after the Everton draw. “We have to continue to think in the next game, everything we do in the week we have to use it in the game.
“If we do that, we are near to winning games like we did in the second half. In this moment we need to focus on day by day. We need to survive this season, and then to think ahead. We have so many problems.
“Then when we go to the game and let the time pass, it’s really hard. I don’t want to just say the negative part, the second half was so much better in the belief. In the end we were near to winning this game.”
United legend Rio Ferdinand pulled no punches in his assessment of their performance. He insisted that things had to change, with Amorim’s side having put in an ‘unforgivable’ display in the opening 45 minutes.
“I questioned this team, whether they had desire and enough fight. But goals change games. Then we saw there was fight and desire. But they can’t continue like this. They’ve got to start games on the front foot,” he told TNT Sports.
“They were positive towards the end. That’s where they’ve got to look [to improve]. I don’t know if I’ve seen a United team this bad. It’s been embarrassing in all facets of the game. Yes we can talk about quality.
“But I think one thing that’s unforgivable is a lack of fight, a lack of desire, not getting near people. There’s been instants in this game, especially the second half, where Man United need to look at Everton and take examples. The ability to track back to run in transitions and fight for balls. Embarrassing to sit here and watch.”
