Ruben Amorim takes new Man Utd quit stance after admitting he may be the wrong man for job

The Manchester United boss has rowed back on the suggestion that he could quit the club, after his comments in the wake of the 2-0 defeat to West Ham suggested he could walk away

Ruben Amorim vowed not to quit Manchester United – but admitted he could be sacked if their results do not improve. After Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham, Amorim suggested he may not be the right man to lead United long-term.

But Amorim qualified his comments, insisting he will not walk away from United, currently 16th in the Premier League, while accepting that decision may ultimately be taken for him. “I’m far from quitting,” said Amorim. “What I’m saying is we need to perform or else they will change us. That is a normal thing.

“What I’m saying is that since I arrived here, I’m always talking about the standards. I cannot see the team having these results in the Premier League and not take responsibility.”

Amorim also revealed why he paid for 30 of his backroom staff to take their families to next week’s Europa League final against Tottenham in Spain.

The United boss put his hand in his pocket after being told by the club that his coaches, physios and wider support team would have to pay for tickets for family and friends to attend the final in Bilbao.

The United manager’s generosity means key members of staff who were otherwise unable to take their families with them to the final will now be able to take up to two friends or family.

“You know that we have a lot of things – people leaving, a lot of changes in the staff,” said Amorim.

“The situation was explained to me and my reaction was to help. It’s not going to change my life. Then we talked to the players and they have the same reaction, everyone does – they want the staff and their families at the final.”

Amorim added that he hopes to have defenders Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot fit for the final.

He said: “I don’t know if they are going to be available. “We are going to try to push because it’s the final matches and this is a final, you know that. All the players want to play that really bad. I don’t know, I think they will not go to Chelsea [on Friday], but we will have a possibility to have some of them for the final.

“Dalot is trying really bad. I don’t want to risk Dalot because, when you start getting one injury, second injury [follows] and it’s a big thing. We cannot have these kinds of problems in our squad. So, we will see, but he’s working really hard to get in the final.”
