Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd sack compensation explained after damaging Brentford blow

By staff29 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Manchester United were beaten 3-1 by Brentford on Saturday, with Ruben Amorim’s side looking second best throughout the game as the pressure mounts on the Portuguese

Ruben Amorim’s position as Manchester United boss is again under scrutiny after his side suffered another Premier League defeat. The Red Devils were outplayed in a 3-1 loss to Brentford, with Amorim’s men looking second best throughout the match.

Igor Thiago capitalised on Harry Maguire’s shaky defending to net the opener, before Altay Bayindir handed the striker a second. Benjamin Sesko pulled one back for United with his maiden goal for the club, but Bruno Fernandes failed to convert from the penalty spot for the second time this season.

Mathias Jensen sealed Brentford’s victory in injury time, handing United their third defeat of the season and casting further doubt over Amorim’s future at Old Trafford.

Questions about his tenure surfaced following the Manchester derby loss to Manchester City, and it was revealed that United would have to fork out a hefty compensation package if they decided to sack Amorim.

According to The Daily Mail, the Reds would need to spend £12million. The Portuguese gaffer took over on November 1 last year, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal with an option for a further 12 months.

United shelled out approximately £9.2m to buy him out of his contract, and should they choose to part ways with Amorim within the first year of his contract, they will face a significant compensation bill.

It’s also understood that Amorim’s backroom team would likewise be entitled to payouts should they choose to leave.

Whether United’s position on the Portuguese boss has shifted remains unclear, though they were previously thought to be backing the 40-year-old firmly, reports the Manchester Evening News.

“It’s always the same to lose at this club; it hurts a lot,” Amorim said after the loss on Saturday.

“We need to think about the next one. Of course we want to win. We didn’t control the game. We played the game of Brentford.

“First balls, second balls, set-pieces. All the crucial moments were against us. It’s tough to lose again but we need to think about the next one.

“The first goal was a long ball. We worked on that in the week, and on set pieces. We knew the long balls were coming and one touch they had the opportunity. We need to do better.

“We didn’t play our game. We only had control for some moments. But it was more or less all the same. We need to play our games, not the opponents’, but they were stronger on that.”
