Ruben Neves has hit a significant milestone with Al-Hilal, amidst rumours linking him to Manchester United.

The 28-year-old is being touted as a potential addition to the Reds’ midfield, as he enters the final year of his contract with the Saudi Pro League team. Earlier this summer, United had eyed Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba as a possible central midfielder.

However, his hefty price tag – thought to be around £100 million – led United to put their interest on hold for now. While they might reconsider a move for the 21-year-old next year, other names like Adam Wharton, Morten Hjulmand, and Elliot Anderson have also been mentioned.

According to the Daily Briefing, Neves is keen on a return to European football after two seasons at Al-Hilal. He previously had a successful stint in the Premier League with Wolves, playing a crucial part in their promotion to the top tier in the 2017/18 season.

The report suggests that Newcastle United and Tottenham are likely to compete for the player’s signature, with Ruben Amorim reportedly showing particular interest in signing him.

Despite the speculation, Neves seems focused on his current role in the Middle East, having recently reached 100 games for Al-Hilal.

He acknowledged the club’s tribute on Instagram with a simple blue ‘love heart’ emoji.

In an interview with Portuguese channel Sport TV back in August, Neves expressed his desire to return to his childhood club, FC Porto.

“I’ve said it in all the interviews – it’s not coming back to finish your career, it’s going back to play and be competitive: that’s my big goal,” he declared.

“Fortunately, I’m 28 years old and I feel very good physically. This is a career goal, because I wasn’t champion at Porto and having a family of over 60 people who support the club, it’s something I want to give them and experience [for myself].

“I used to go to the Aliados to celebrate Porto’s titles but now I want to be on the other side and want to see my family celebrate.”
