Ryan Reynolds gets honest verdict from ex-Wrexham star after dad’s rant and transfer exit

Ollie Palmer has left Wrexham by mutual consent after three-and-a-half years at the club, and the striker has shared his thoughts on the club’s Hollywood owners

Ollie Palmer has laid bare his thoughts on Wrexham’s Hollywood owners following his exit from the Welsh club. The striker departed the Red Dragons by mutual consent last week before sealing a switch to League Two outfit Swindon Town ahead of the summer transfer window slamming shut.

The 33-year-old netted 46 times in 156 appearances during his three-and-a-half-year spell with Wrexham, playing a key role in their remarkable three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship. Palmer became a firm favourite with supporters and the club’s celebrity co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

Deadpool actor Reynolds took to social media to admit he felt like he’d been dealt a “gut punch” when news of the former AFC Wimbledon striker’s departure emerged on Friday. But Palmer’s time at Wrexham wasn’t without its bumps after boss Phil Parkinson cast him aside during the latter stages of last season.

He found himself surplus to requirements after the ex-Bolton manager brought in forwards Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith during the January window. The decision didn’t go down well with his father Andy Palmer, who publicly slammed Parkinson for axing his son from the team in a social media outburst.

Despite his dad’s anger, Palmer himself has now disclosed he harbours no bitterness over how his Wrexham career ended. He shared his thoughts with BBC Radio Wiltshire after scoring his first goal for Swindon in a 3-2 EFL Trophy win over Reading.

“I didn’t feature in the league this season [for Wrexham] unfortunately,” said Palmer. “It’s just the way it is. It’s football and we had a huge squad there.

“The club invested heavily, and you absolutely can’t begrudge it. I walked in at Wrexham football club on a Monday night, and started the next day without meeting anyone. It’s a fast moving football club.”

Last month, Palmer ended his time in North Wales with a bang. The striker came off the bench in the second half as Red Dragons defeated Hull City in the EFL Cup first-round, netting two goals in stoppage-time to take the match to penalties, which Wrexham won 5-3.

Reynolds has lavished praise on both Palmer and Swindon, describing them as an “excellent club” in a social media post. And the player believes that both of Wrexham’s co-owners will be cheering for him and his new team.

“It’s always a pleasure to be around Rob and Ryan, and they’re amazing people,” he said. “You can see them already supporting Swindon Town.

“They’re talking [about Swindon] on social media, which is obviously great for the football club and the exposure, but they’re only doing it because of them as people. They don’t get anything out of that.

“There’s no financial gain and it doesn’t give them exposure. They’re just doing it out of the goodness of their heart. Obviously, it is partly because I’m here, but because I’m here, they’re now probably Swindon fans.”
