Hollywood-owned Wrexham have given Burnley’s Jay Rodriguez a financial package worth £15,000 per week to entice the 35-year-old striker to the Racecourse Ground
Wrexham have splashed their Hollywood cash to secure an audacious move for a former Premier League striker.
The promotion-chasing League One side, owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have already made one big move in the transfer market on Friday. The Red Dragons forked out a reported club-record fee of £2million to secure the signature of Reading striker Sam Smith.
The club has now confirmed it has bolstered its frontline even further after agreeing a deal for Burnley forward Jay Rodriguez. The ex-Southampton striker, who has 258 top-tier appearances under his belt, has finalised his move to North Wales.
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is said to have secured the 35-year-old’s services after he was offered a financial package worth £15,000 per week, including add-ons, per the Daily Telegraph. Rodriguez has turned out for Burnley more than 300 times over two spells with his hometown club, scoring 56 times.
However, his minutes have been limited for the Clarets this season after making just 10 starts in all competitions, and he’s joined Wrexham for an undisclosed fee after entering the last six months of his contract in a deal running until the end of the 2025/26 season.
On signing for the club, the striker said: “I’m made up to join the club. I can’t wait to get out on the training pitch and meet everyone. I hope I can use my experience to help every single player in the squad and gain something from the group as well.”
He added: “To join the story that has evolved at Wrexham with clear targets is exciting for me.” Rodriguez started his career at Burnley after making his debut in 2007, scoring 41 goals in 128 appearances in his first stint.
His fine form in front of goal then earned him a move to Southampton for a fee of around £7million in 2012, before later making his one and only England international appearance. The striker also played for West Brom in the Premier League – starring alongside current Wrexham first-team captain James McClean.
Rodriguez returned to Turf Moor for his second spell with the Clarets in 2019, winning promotion to the Premier League again in 2023. He arrives at Wrexham having made more than 550 appearances across his career, scoring 148 goals.
Wrexham manager Parkinson said: “I’m delighted to welcome Jay Rodriguez to the club. He’s an experienced striker with real quality and we’re looking forward to working with him.”
