Emergency crews met the aircraft after landing at London Stansted and were joined by police, paramedics and an air ambulance – but the man was pronounced dead at the scene
A Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing in London after a man tragically died on board following a medical emergency.
The flight, from Tirana, Albania, to Manchester Airport, was forced to divert shorlty before 8pm on Sunday, November 10, after having already flown over Switzerland and France. Emergency crews met the aircraft after landing and were joined by police, paramedics and an air ambulance. The man, whose age has not been confirmed, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
London Stansted confirmed that the plane was surrounded by medics and the airport fire service after the passenger was said to have suffered a medical emergency mid-air. A flight path captured the aircraft departing from Albania on Sunday, before travelling past Italy, Switzerland and France – and then landing at Stansted.
A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “One ambulance, one Hazardous Area Response Team vehicle, one paramedic car and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were called to Stansted Airport on Sunday evening following reports of man with a medical emergency on an aircraft. Sadly, despite the best efforts of all involved, the man had died at the scene.”
A Stansted Airport spokesperson added: “The flight you refer to diverted into London Stansted just before 20.00 last night due to an on-board medical emergency. The flight landed safely and was met by medics, airport fire service and ambulance crews. Despite the best efforts of all those responding to the situation, we understand the passenger did unfortunately pass away.” Ryanair has been contacted for a comment.
Earlier this year, a British passenger suddenly died on board a Ryanair flight whilst the plane was positioned at 38,000 feet in the air.
Horrified passengers watched the man receive CPR before he was pronounced dead. The tragedy took place after the travellers boarded the plane at Malaga, Spain, as they expected to make their way back to Manchester Airport. However, the pilot was forced to divert the plane to Bordeaux, France on January 7.
The disturbing incident is said to have caused one person to faint due to stress, whilst children were said to be “confused and upset”. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) later confirmed that the passenger who died was a British national and that their family were being supported.
