A staggering number of Brits fret over car damage, with one in four drivers confessing they’ve unintentionally damaged another car in a supermarket car park or have been on the receiving end of such an incident.
Two-thirds of Brits would describe themselves as anxious drivers, which only heightens their worry about damaging their vehicles and having to file a claim.
In an effort to dodge dents and damage, half of Brits have taken extra measures such as occupying two parking spaces and intentionally parking next to the most luxurious car they can spot, hoping that its owner will be extremely cautious with their own doors.
Meanwhile, one in 10 drivers admitted to using a parent and baby space, despite not having any children with them, for the convenience of extra space on either side of the doors.
The AA commissioned these findings to promote Accident Assist, a round-the-clock support service for members.
They also constructed a humorous ‘drive-thru bubble wrap machine’ to demonstrate the lengths people might go to avoid scratches, dents, and dings.
TV personality Scarlett Moffatt, who needed 14 attempts to pass her driving test, was the first to ‘trial’ the drive-thru. She commented: “Car parks can be a nightmare, especially with the size of some cars these days.”
“It’s no small wonder people are afraid of getting their own vehicle scraped or dinged, and how many have accidentally done it to someone else.”
As many as 23% would be ‘very interested’ in shelling out for a spot with a ‘dent free guarantee’ to avoid the risk of scratches from negligent drivers.
For many Brits, added protections mean they can sidestep the hassle of making any claims. As 1 in 10 admit they wouldn’t know where to begin if they had to and 44% would be frustrated by all the admin involved in getting any damages fixed.
Tim Rankin, managing director of AA Accident Assist, commented: “Even the smallest dents can amount to a significant inconvenience. It’s not just about the car’s aesthetics, but the time, effort, and often money needed to rectify these issues.”
