Pupils, parents and teachers at St Mark’s C of E School in Shirley, Southampton, were placed into lockdown this afternoon when a man was seen nearby holding two knives
A school was placed into lockdown this afternoon following reports a man was walking nearby, armed with two knives.
Pupils at St Mark’s C of E School were ordered to get under their desks by a message over the tannoy as the situation unfolded in Southampton, Hampshire. Parents are also believed to have been locked inside the building. The order to begin the lockdown began at around 3.20pm when the man, 44, was seen holding the two knives in a nearby road. Hampshire Police are believed to have attended and arrested the man, allowing the school to cancel the lockdown.
One parent who was among those trapped in the school told the Southern Daily Echo: “It is madness. The kids are hiding under tables and there is a tannoy going ‘lockdown’.
“A lockdown like this is not good for the mental health of the kids. It is a bit bizarre.”
