The death of Seren Jenkins, 14, is being probed by police after the schoolgirl’s unexpected death at a rugby club in her hometown earlier this month, with a fundraiser set up to cover funeral costs
Police are probing the “unexplained” death of a schoolgirl, 14, who collapsed at a rugby club.
Seren-Ella Jenkins died in hospital following the incident at her local on Friday, November 14. Paramedics and the air ambulance service rushed to the scene at Amman United in Tycroes, Ammanford, where Seren was airlifted to hospital from the field. She died the following morning.
A statement from Seren’s family has since paid tribute to the 14-year-old and thanked the community for raising more than £8,000. They have also revealed some of this money would be donated to asthma services. They said: “She was a loving daughter, big and little sister.
“Seren lived her short life to the full and was a budding artist, rugby player, and social media lover. Seren was loved by all who knew her and no doubt will also be remembered for her sense of humour.”
The family has also thanked the emergency services who rushed to the scene and tried to save Seren, adding: “We would also like to take this opportunity to thank people for their kind words and support at this horrific time but would now like to ask for this time to grieve in private.”
Seren’s friend Cari Bradshaw has since set up a fundraiser to help cover the costs of the funeral, raising £6,000 so far, WalesOnline reported. They said: “I’ve set up this page because my friends and I would like to raise money to help Stephen, Sarah and the family with the costs for the funeral and memorial for our very special friend Seren.
“Seren was suddenly taken from us all on Saturday 16th of November, she’s left a big hole in all our hearts and we miss her very very much. Please donate if you can to help us raise as much money as possible to help Seren’s family. Any donations will be greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small.”
A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Police were called on Friday evening, November 15, to a report of a medical emergency in the Ammanford area. A female teenager became unwell and was taken to hospital where, sadly, she passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning.
“Our thoughts remain with the family at this difficult time. The death is currently being treated as unexplained and a report will be prepared for HM Coroner.”
The Welsh Ambulance Service said an ambulance, first responders, and an air ambulance were called to the club at 9.55pm. The club postponed all games last weekend as a mark of respect. A statement from the club said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances the club will be closed – and all games are postponed – out of respect.”
