Sergio Aguero has given his thoughts on Arsenal’s Premier League title chances after Jamie Carragher suggested Mikel Arteta is under pressure due to the lack of silverware he has won at the club
Sergio Aguero has dismissed Jamie Carragher’s suggestion that the “peak years” of Mikel Arteta’s time in charge of Arsenal are behind him.
Arteta has transformed Arsenal into Premier League title contenders since his appointment in 2019, but the only major silverware they have won during his tenure is the 2020 FA Cup. The Gunners have finished second in the league for the past two seasons and Carragher has questioned if they will ever win the title under Arteta.
In a column for the Daily Telegraph, the Liverpool legend wrote: “Have we already witnessed the peak years of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal reign? It feels like this Emirates era is heading towards a crossroads, with Arsenal in the middle of a high-stakes game.
“This will either be one of the greatest seasons in the club’s history – ending a 21-year wait for the Premier League title – or a campaign which ends amid a highly-charged post-season review into how they squandered their best chance to become champions in two decades.
“For now, Arsenal are just about doing enough to keep the optimists on board the Arteta train. However, emotions are running high. There have been moments this season when Arsenal have been an average performance or a defeat away from the first signs of a derailment.
“Each time it looks like that cliff edge is coming into view, they have responded, hit the brakes and reversed away – most recently with the north London derby win in midweek. Now they need a series of statement performances and victories to convince the world they are title material.”
However, five-time Premier League winner Aguero disagrees with Carragher’s assessment and remains convinced Arsenal will win the Premier League under Arteta “sooner rather than later”. Aguero told Stake : “I don’t see why Mikel Arteta should feel under pressure.
“Look at where Arsenal were before he arrived and how they’ve evolved under his guidance. They’ve been consistently competing at the top, which isn’t easy when you’re up against sides like Man City and Liverpool who have also been giving concerted efforts to take the trophy.
“Arsenal, since entering this new cycle, have shown up consistently. They’ve got great players and a newfound trademark playing style. The fans ought to be happy. I’m sure winning the Premier League is their end goal, and I believe it’s bound to happen sooner rather than later.”
Arsenal currently sit second in the league, six points behind top of the table Liverpool who do have a game in hand over their rivals after last month’s Merseyside derby was postponed due to Storm Darragh.
