A swimmer at the Tangalooma Wrecks off Moreton Island, in Queensland, Australia, was rushed to hospital with abdominal and leg injuries when he was bitten by a shark
A man enjoying a swim at a popular tourist destination was airlifted to hospital when he was suddenly mauled by a shark.
The unnamed person was at the Tangalooma Wrecks on Moreton Island, a cluster of ships purposefully sunk between the 1960s and 80s. The area on the coast in Queensland, Australia, attracts several marine creatures, including fish and dolphins.
On Saturday, it also attracted a shark which suddenly attacked the tourist. He suffered several injuries and was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital. Queensland Ambulance Service said: “ A shark bite incident was reported in the waters near The Wrecks Walking Track at 3pm.
“Paramedics are treating a patient with abdominal and leg injuries. A rescue helicopter is on scene. One patient was airlifted stable to Princess Alexandra Hospital following an earlier shark bite incident on Morton Island.”
Estate agents Tangalooma Moreton Island Properties 4 Sale said on Facebook : “So a person was bitten by a shark at the wrecks yesterday. I send my best wishes for a speedy recovery to them and my thoughts are with their family.
“Please don’t let the media hype deter you from visiting our beautiful piece of the country. This is very rare but unfortunately we live in one of the most dangerous countries in the world and it can happen.
“Spiders, crocodiles, sharks, jelly fish and snakes live amongst us each and every day and we just need to love the beautiful country we have and be conscious so we can live without fear. See you soon in paradise hopefully.”
Earlier this month, also in Queensland, a popular teenager was ripped apart by a shark during an afternoon swim after earlier posting a final, haunting social media post about her love of the sea. Charlize Zmuda, 17, suffered “catastrophic injuries” to her arm and body in a horror incident at around 4.45pm Monday local time on Bribie Island.
Beachgoers reported hearing screams as paramedics rushed to the scene, but she was unable to be saved and died of her injuries. The teen’s last social media post showed Charlize at the idyllic beach with her surf board, while another photo showed her enjoying the ocean waves. She wrote simply: “Bribie ‘25.”
Several friends responded with their messages of love and support. One said: “Rest in peace beautiful, you seemed to love the ocean so much.”
Another added: “I’m so lucky to have known you, rest in peace gorgeous girl.” Another said: “May you rest in peace. My heart is just broken for you and your family.”
