The 1p mirror cleaning hack that gives you a streak-free mirror, expert shares the tips on what you can use from your kitchen to make sure your mirror has a “streak-free finish”

Everyone has a mirror in their house. Often in the bathroom and also in the bedroom – to check you haven’t forgotten to change out of your PJs before you leave for work.

Sometimes you might stop by if you have a passage mirror and take a quick look or touch up before you whizz out the front door. Mirrors get used the most but are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning them.

There has been a skyrocketing 171 per cent rise in searches for “DIY cleaning” in the UK. Bathroom expert Alex Woods at Victorian Plumbing, has shared ways to clean a mirror by just using foods that are already sitting in your kitchen cupboard.

Tea bags

“Black tea contains natural tannins which act like a gentle cleaner. Not only does it cost just 1p, it removes grease, smudges and the oils left behind from fingerprints, leaving a streak-free finish.

“To use it, steep a tea bag in hot water, let it cool down, and dip a soft cloth into the tea and wipe it across the mirror to lift away dirt. Then, dry and polish the surface with kitchen roll or a microfiber cloth for a clear, streak-free shine.”

Stale bread

Whilst not the most pleasant of items to use, Mr Woods says: “Stale bread works like a natural sponge due to its slightly rough texture that can gently lift dust, dirt, and fingerprints from the glass, without scratching it. It can absorb grease and grime, making it surprisingly effective for delicate surfaces like mirrors.

“Simply press a piece of stale bread gently against the mirror to blot away marks, then finish by sweeping over with a dry cloth for a streak-free shine.”

Raw potato

“The starch inside a raw potato works almost like a natural sponge. When rubbed onto glass, it helps loosen dirt and smudges while leaving behind an invisible layer that stops condensation from clinging to the surface.

“To try it, cut a potato in half and rub the cut side directly over the mirror. Then, wipe it down with a cloth to remove any residue. You’ll be left with a streak-free finish, and a mirror that resists fogging up after hot showers.”

Lemon

“Lemon is a go-to cleaning agent for many surfaces due to its containing citric acid, which helps break down grease and mineral deposits whilst leaving the room with a lovely citrus scent.

“To use it, cut a lemon in half and either rub the cut side directly on the mirror, or squeeze a little juice into a bowl of water and dip a soft cloth into the solution. Wipe the mirror with the cloth, then buff dry with a microfiber cloth or paper towel for a streak-free shine.”

These tips might be surprising, but do work and make sure your mirror is left streak-free and squeaky clean.
