Simple kitchen waste ingredient to feed your lawn in August to help it grow thicker and greener

By staff29 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The hot summer weather can be really tough on lawns, but there is a simple way to help revive them – and now gardening experts have shared a simple way to fertilise a lawn with a single ingredient

August can be a challenging month for maintaining lush green lawns, with scorching temperatures often turning the grass brown and brittle. However, gardening gurus at Turf Technologies have revealed a remarkably straightforward tip to rejuvenate your turf.

They recommend using coffee grounds as a fertiliser, which are packed with the essential nutrients that grass craves to cultivate “a thick, green turf.”

They explained: “Not only can coffee revitalise us in the morning, it can also revitalise our lawns. For us, it’s the caffeine that does the magic. For your lawn it’s the minerals coffee contains – nitrogen and phosphorus.”

Nitrogen is crucial for growing healthy grass blades, keeping the lawn verdant and promoting dense growth where it may have thinned.

Phosphorus plays a key role in root development, ensuring roots are robust enough to retain more moisture, which is vital for the lawn’s survival during dry spells or intense heat, reports the Express.

While it’s typically not recommended to apply nitrogen-rich fertilisers to lawns in summer due to the risk of burning the grass, natural options like coffee grounds release nutrients gradually into the soil.

This slow release feeds the grass gently, avoiding harm and offering a more sustainable nutrient source than synthetic fertilisers, leading to a lawn that’s not only stronger but healthier in the long run.

Additionally, incorporating coffee grounds into the soil boosts organic matter, attracting earthworms and aiding in reducing soil compaction.

Coffee grounds are a straightforward yet effective method to give your lawn a lift, particularly when it’s likely struggling due to the heat. It’s an eco-friendly way to reduce food waste while also benefiting your garden.

How to utilise coffee grounds on a lawn in August.

Wet coffee grounds tend to clump together in the soil and can become mouldy, so it’s crucial they’re dry before being used on your lawn.

However, bear in mind that coffee is acidic, and while it can benefit your lawn, it’s preferable to use leftover coffee grounds that have already been diluted with water as they’ll be less strong.

Next, simply scatter a thin layer of coffee grounds onto your lawn. Ensure they’re evenly distributed and water your lawn after application to help them penetrate the soil.

Coffee grounds decompose very slowly, so you only need to feed your lawn with them once in early August to help achieve lush, thick grass that will stay greener for longer in autumn.
