Cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy has offered a health update as he gears up to participate in his charity cycling event the ‘Tour de Four’. The six-time Olympic champion appeared on BBC Breakfast on Friday morning and discussed his health ahead of the ride.

Hoy, who ranks as Britain’s second-most decorated Olympian, received a prostate cancer diagnosis two years ago after experiencing shoulder pain. Sadly, Hoy has been informed that his cancer is terminal, having spread to his bones and reached stage four.

He has previously shared that doctors have given him two to four years to live, yet he continues to seize life with both hands. “Can we ask, on behalf of everyone, how you are?” asked Breakfast presenter Charlie Stayt. “I’m doing pretty well, thanks,” replied Hoy.

“Everything is stable at the moment, I had a bit of radiotherapy a few weeks ago. Feeling all right!

“Just cracking on. I’ve been training hard for the Tour de Four. I’m just so excited, this has been on the horizon for a long time.”

Tour de Four represents a new cycling initiative launched by Hoy, with a “vision to change perceptions around stage four cancer following his own diagnosis”.

Hoy invites people affected by cancer to unite for the inaugural event, with anyone capable of riding a bicycle welcome to participate. The event aims to generate funds for cancer charities throughout the United Kingdom, while also challenging misconceptions.

“It’s just fantastic that we are finally here,” Hoy added. “There’s going to be thousands of people celebrating, riding around the roads outside Glasgow and raising valuable funds for cancer charities across the UK.”

Hoy revealed that the target was £1million, but they’ve already raised a whopping £1.6million, with hopes to reach the £2million mark.

In addition, he announced that elctronic music legends The Chemical Brothers will be performing live at the event, and joining him on the ride will be fellow British sporting legend Andy Murray.

When asked by host Stayt who was most apprehensive about the ride, Hoy responded with a grin: “I feel like I’m betraying confidence, here.

“I don’t think Andy would mind. Andy Murray. I did an event with him earlier this year, he was asking about the cycling.

“He’ll be absolutely fine, he’s fit as a fiddle. He’s concentrating more on golf at the moment, though, than cycling!”
