Skirting boards will stay dust-free for longer when one 10-second task is done once a month

By staff21 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Skirting boards tend to attract a lot of dust, but there is a simple way to keep them clean for a long time without having to wipe them down every day

Skirting boards in homes seem to be dust magnets, no matter how often they’re wiped down. However, there’s a simple trick to keep them clean for longer.

As autumn sets in and radiators heat up our homes, they also dry out the air, leading to static electricity build-up on plastic and wooden surfaces.

This static charge on skirting boards acts like a magnet, attracting debris from the floor and causing it to stick firmly to the wall. Despite regular cleaning, if the static isn’t dealt with, your skirting boards will be covered in dust within a day, leaving your home feeling stuffy and unkempt.

But an expert at Central Skirting has revealed a straightforward solution – cleaning your skirting boards with tumble dryer sheets, reports the Express.

The expert shared: “A surprising but effective way to clean your skirting boards is to use tumble dryer sheets! They can easily wipe up dust and dirt, and as they are naturally scented, they leave a great smell in the home too.”

Tumble dryer sheets are designed to neutralise static charge on clothes, preventing them from clumping together in the tumble dryer. This same anti-static effect can help reduce static build-up on other surfaces, meaning dust and other debris won’t be able to stick to your skirting boards.

They also leave behind a light coating that will continue to protect skirting boards, keeping dusty grime away and making cleaning them much easier in the future.

You also need to use dryer sheets to clean skirting boards once a month to prevent static build-up, but you may have to do it every two weeks if you have pets or if you have a carpeted floor, as they attract a lot of debris.

How to use dryer sheets to keep dust away from skirting boards

To begin, you need to clean any dust already sitting on your skirting boards. Spray them with a surface cleaner, or you can make a homemade cleaner with white vinegar.

White vinegar is acidic and will break down any sticky dust quickly, so you do not have to spend a lot of time wiping down the surface. You just need to mix one cup of white vinegar and one cup of warm water in an empty spray bottle and wipe it down with a cloth.

Once the skirting boards are completely clean, take a used dryer sheet and run it along them. Do not overdo it.

Using multiple sheets with too much dryer sheet residue will attract dust instead of repelling it.

After a few seconds of wiping down, your skirting boards should repel dust for up to a month, so you can keep your home clean without much effort.
