Sky Sports apologise after Cole Palmer swears in response to question about Chelsea form

Cole Palmer let his frustration show after scoring his first goal since January to help Chelsea to a huge 3-1 win against Liverpool, boosting their hopes of Champions League qualification

Sky Sports were forced to apologise after Chelsea star Cole Palmer swore during a post-match interview. Palmer, 22, sent a pointed message to the ‘idiots’ and ‘trolls’ who’ve criticised his recent form.

The England international scored his first goal since January to wrap up Chelsea’s huge 3-1 win at home to Liverpool which boosts their Champions League hopes. Palmer stepped up to take a penalty in the 96th minute after Jarell Quansah fouled Moises Caicedo.

Asked if he was nervous by Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davison, the midfielder said: “I just felt normal. Obviously s*** happens, I went three months without scoring but it just gives me more fight and motivation to do more for myself and for the team.

“Social media nowadays is full of idiots, the trolls and whatever. I don’t pay any attention to that. I’ve scored today and I’m happy but it’s only one and I’ve got to keep improving and try and reach new levels.”

On his difficult start to 2025, Palmer added: “Getting chances and not scoring, it feels like you’re letting your team down. I feel like I am mentally strong anyway. I feel pride in helping the team and if I’m not doing that, I’m not happy.

“Today I felt confident, I was trying things, first time passes, playing forward. When you have got him (Caicedo) in front of you, it’s a dream. From the start of the season, he has been our best player, he wins the ball back all the time, he’s humble, nice to everyone and everyone loves him.”

Sky Sports presenter Kelly Cates was forced to apologise for Palmer’s language before pundits Roy Keane, Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Redknapp praised his candidness. Caicedo also hailed his team-mate, saying: “Cole he’s an amazing guy. Always train hard, so happy for him. He helps us a lot even when he didn’t score. He’s a great guy and he deserves everything.”

The win moves Chelsea three points clear of sixth-placed Nottingham Forest. The Blues went 1-0 up inside three minutes when Enzo Fernandez slotted home.

An own goal from Quansah doubled Chelsea’s lead before the hour mark, only for Virgil van Dijk to pull one back with five minutes of normal time remaining. Palmer then made no mistake from the penalty spot to seal the victory.
