Social media car upgrade trend could leave drivers uninsured, expert warns

Although the promise of modern connectivity for a fraction of the price seems appealing, industry insiders warn DIY alterations may reduce the value of your car and invalidate your insurance

A growing social media trend shows younger drivers installing low-cost stereo systems promising Apple CarPlay compatibility for older vehicles – but many are completely unaware of how costly this move could prove.

There are thousands of videos circulating online showing people fitting the units themselves. These are often bought directly through social media shopping platforms like TikTok Shop, where some are for sale for less than £30.

While the trend has gained momentum due to its affordability and convenience, experts have warned that these modifications could carry significant hidden risks. They explained that while a rising number of drivers are purchasing stereos from unverified sellers and taking on home installations, they don’t fully understand the potential consequences of their actions.

Although the promise of modern connectivity for a fraction of the price of professional upgrades is appealing, industry insiders warn these DIY alterations could invalidate your insurance, put your car’s electronics at risk, and even reduce its market value when it comes time to sell.

Motoring expert at Dick Lovett, Alex Lee, explained: “Many drivers, especially those who are new to driving, don’t realise that upgrading their stereo counts as an aftermarket modification. Most insurers require you to declare any changes to your car’s original setup, even if it seems small, and if you don’t tell them, you could risk having your policy invalidated or your claim denied.

“Adding a new stereo can also make your car more attractive to thieves, which is another reason your insurer needs to know about it as they may need to make adjustments to reflect the increased risk.

“Some insurers might be fine with modifications, but DIY installs and devices bought from TikTok Shop could mean higher premiums or even your policy being cancelled. The safest thing you can do is check with your insurer before making any upgrades.”

Beyond issues of insurance, drivers are also being warned about potential electrical problems that can arise from cheap devices and non-professional installation.

Lee warned: “Fitting a stereo yourself might seem easy, especially when everyone seems to be doing it on TikTok, but if the wiring isn’t right, you could end up draining your battery, causing dashboard warning lights to flash, or even interfering with the car’s built-in safety systems.

“On top of that, many of the stereos being sold on TikTok Shop come from unverified sellers, so the devices themselves could be faulty or poorly made, which brings its own risks. Worst case, it could damage your car’s electronics and lead to expensive repair bills, especially if your car still has a warranty that could be voided by non-professional work.

“If you’re set on upgrading your car’s stereo, always use reputable products and have them installed by a qualified auto-electrician.”

Then there is the financial consideration in relation to the car’s value. Lee said: “Installing a CarPlay stereo might seem like a great addition now, but when it comes time to sell or trade in your car, buyers and dealerships often prefer original or professionally fitted equipment.

“If the upgrade isn’t done properly, or the unit doesn’t fit well, it can put off potential buyers and even lower your car’s resale value. If you do upgrade it, make sure to keep the original stereo and all the paperwork. That way you can swap it back when you want to sell your car, and you’ll get to keep the stereo you bought.”

As the popularity of low-cost Apple CarPlay units grows across social media, the warnings serve as a reminder that quick and inexpensive fixes can come with costly consequences. Professional installation and transparent communication with insurers are strongly advised for anyone hoping to upgrade their system without creating more costly problems down the line.
