Spanish city outshines Barcelona and Paris as top European city break destination

The best European cities for a city break has been revealed by a recent study – beating popular destinations such as Paris, Rome, and Barcelona.

When planning European city breaks, destinations like Paris, Rome, and Barcelona typically spring to mind, yet a fresh study reveals these aren’t necessarily the continent’s finest offerings. Consumer champion Which? surveyed 1,600 members about their European city experiences.

The Polish city of Krakow claimed the top spot, with Venice securing second place. Third place went to the magnificent Valencia, outshining fellow Spanish destinations including Barcelona and Madrid, both renowned holiday hotspots.

Which? evaluated cities across seven measures: cuisine and beverages, lodging, cultural attractions, retail opportunities, transport convenience, crowd levels, and affordability.

Spain’s third-largest metropolis, Valencia, boasts an exceptional culinary landscape. The city features numerous Michelin-starred establishments alongside relaxed paella venues, securing five stars in Which?’s dining category.

Renowned for accessible transport links and pedestrian-friendly streets, Valencia earned four stars for ease of navigation and shares the title of Spain’s most budget-friendly destination with Malaga. Travel specialists discovered accommodation averages just £106 per night.

One survey participant commented: “Valencia has it all. Medieval centre with associated architecture, narrow streets and old markets.”

On TripAdvisor, one visitor penned: “It is very interesting to walk the streets of the old town of Valencia and get lost, discovering squares, very narrow streets, facades of historic houses (including the narrowest house). And stop anywhere for a drink or a bite to eat. There’s no place in Valencia where I don’t eat well.”

Another traveller remarked: “Valencia’s Casco Histórico is a vibrant maze of history, architecture, and culture. From Gothic cathedrals to bustling markets and street art, it’s a walkable feast of sights and sounds. Don’t miss the Cathedral, La Lonja, or the lively Barrio del Carmen. A perfect blend of old and new.”

Revealing the survey results, Which? Travel’s Deputy Editor Naomi Leach commented: “Whether you are looking for culture, art, history or top gastronomy, there are several European cities that deliver. Book ahead and choose to visit off season to secure the best prices.

“British holidaymakers who look beyond the most famous destinations, can find great value for money in foodie escapes, such as Krakow and Valencia. Despite the crowds, classic city breaks Venice and Vienna scored highly with visitors due to their unparalleled cultural attractions.”

Europe’s top five city breaks:

  1. Krakow, Poland
  2. Venice, Italy
  3. Valencia, Spain
  4. Vienna, Austria
  5. Istanbul, Turkey
