The beautiful spot dubbed a ‘hidden gem’ is a perfect mix of city and beach – and has a lot less tourists. One individual said it’s their ‘favourite place’ but not many know about it
With summer upon us, countless holidaymakers are planning getaways and outdoor adventures to capitalise on the sunny season. Whilst Britain boasts numerous beautiful destinations, it’s no secret that our weather remains unpredictable – swinging between scorching 30C heat and torrential downpours. Therefore, heading abroad virtually guarantees sun-soaked days.
Spain remains a firm favourite amongst Brits, but instead of flocking to well-trodden destinations like Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Benidorm and other hotspots, this overlooked gem reportedly delivers an ideal blend of urban culture and coastal relaxation – with significantly fewer crowds.
The holiday destination in question is Santander, situated in Spain’s Cantabria region. This coastal city sprawls across an expansive bay featuring numerous spectacular beaches, rolling hillsides and breathtaking panoramas. Visitors can also enjoy abundant restaurants serving fresh seafood alongside a bustling shopping district along Alameda de Oviedo Boulevard.
Plus, the city boasts a laid-back vibe and feels considerably more tranquil than other Spanish destinations.

Culture enthusiasts can explore arts and history at Centro Botin – a contemporary art gallery – or embark on guided tours of the historic Magadelna Palace dating from the early 20th century.
Interesting tidbit: the renowned Santander bank derives its name from this very city, having been established there.
Recently, one traveller called Ali, who goes by @aligoingabroad online, posted about her Santander experience and hailed it as her “favourite hidden gem”. Ali stated: “Stop going to tourist spots in Spain and got to this hidden gem. Spaniards say it has the best beaches in Spain.”
She highlighted that there are numerous beaches suitable for swimming and water sports.
Enumerating her favourite aspects of Santander, she continued: “The city is beautiful, extremely cheap accommodation, escalators around the city so you don’t have to walk up steep hills. Did I mention beautiful beaches? You’ll have a new sunset spot everyday. Quiet areas with no tourists.”
She also pointed out that the food is affordable and there are stunning hiking trails.
“I love Santader,” chimed in one person. Another expressed: “Santander has my heart. I lived there last summer studying Spanish at UIMP [Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo.”
Another individual shared: “Studying abroad here now and falling in love with the city.” While someone else labelled it as their “favourite place in the world”.
An additional visitor to the location commented: “Not only is Santander incredible, but the whole region of Cantabria. Really recommended and it’s quite small so it’s very easy to drive to places.”
After viewing the clip, another person declared: “You have fully convinced me to go there.”
One can take a ferry from Portsmouth to Santander, or fly to Bilbao. From there, a train or bus journey to Santander takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes. Driving or taking a taxi will take around an hour and 26 minutes.
