Spoons announced that 8oz sirloins were no longer being served at 40 of its boozers, two weeks ago. But the budget pub’s doppelg nger – Witherspoons in Pattaya, Thailand – is still selling them
A fake Wetherspoons, known as Witherspoons, located in Pattaya, Thailand, continues to serve steak despite the budget pub chain’s decision to remove the classic dish from its menu.
Two weeks ago, Spoons announced that 8oz sirloins would no longer be served at 40 of its pubs, a move that left some customers irate. However, at Witherspoons – which comes complete with its iconic patterned carpet and cheap booze – the iconic dish is still being offered. The pub, which also serves all-day breakfasts, offers three different steaks with a variety of sides and sauces.
On Wednesdays, a ribeye steak can be had for just £7. The dishes range from £17 to £23 and include options such as a New York strip, tenderloin and a ribeye steak.
The bar has also become popular among Brits abroad, boasting a 4.1 out of five-star rating on Google. A spokesperson for Witherspoons said: “Calling all meat lovers. Get ready to treat yourself at Witherspoons Pattaya with a feast that’s worth every bite. Don’t just dream about it — dive into some serious meaty goodness. We can’t wait to see you here.”
One customer, Gary Homan, praised the venue, saying: “Out of all the places around, this is a catch-all and does everything kind of place. A very big menu caters to all tastes and a wide range of drinks with the cheapest prices around. The waitresses are fantastic, very attentive and polite, not to mention hard working because it gets very busy.
“The food is great, not exceptional but exactly what you expect for a pub/bar atmosphere and certainly well worth the price.”
A Wetherspoon spokesperson confirmed to What’s The Jam: “We can confirm that the company has taken steak off the menu in approximately 40 pubs It is still available in 760 Wetherspoon pubs.”
A disgruntled customer, Christine, expressed her disappointment: “Would like to know why on earth Wetherspoons have taken steaks off the menu. Travesty.”
Another patron, Craig, who visited The Samuel Peto in Folkestone, Kent — one of the affected pubs, lamented: “No steaks here either. Evening ruined.” The decision follows a price slash, to pints, with some available for as little as 99p until January 16.
Exactly 750 pubs across the UK will participate in the event. However, if you are not a pint drinker, more than 650 branches will be offering a glass of Coldwater Creek wine, from Chile’s Valle Central wine region, for £2.49. Wetherspoons also recently announced that it has closed down dozens of locations as the hospitality industry continues to struggle with inflation and cost pressures.
Despite Tim Martin’s Wetherspoons accumulating over £2billion in sales for the first time last year, the chain sold a number of locations. The George, in Wanstead, and Hain Line, in St Ives, have been sold since September and have since closed their doors, according to the London Economic.
