Gardening during the summer can be a hard task, but it often comes with a lot of challenges, especially when it comes to unwanted intruders such as squirrels. There’s a way to get rid of them using this one kitchen ingredient.

Now that summer temperatures are hitting record highs, taking care of our garden spaces is becoming more important than ever. When it comes to wanting to keep squirrels away, there’s a way to keep them away with this one kitchen ingredient.

As explained by DIY Everywhere, animals rely on their sense of smell to navigate around places. Therefore, the use of chemicals or other natural strong scents can affect their hunt to get nutrients to survive.

Although squirrels and chipmunks can be harmless and a nice sight to take a couple of pictures of, they can create a lot of mess in your hard-worked garden spaces. Squirrels can damage plants, trees, as well as bird feeders. They can also eat any fresh produce that you’ve been planting, causing a mess.

The site said: “These animals are naturally curious and resourceful, making them difficult to deter once they have set their sight on your garden. Understanding how to keep these critters at bay is essential for any gardeners looking to protect their plants and maintain the beauty of their outdoor space.”

One of the many ways to help gardeners deter any pests is by spraying some vinegar. They explained: “Vinegar has a strong, acrid smell that is unpleasant to many animals. Spraying a vinegar solution around your garden can create a barrier that squirrels and chipmunks are reluctant to cross.”

Alternatively, gardeners can also use peppermint oil, garlic, coffee grounds and hot peppers. These sources are not only natural but also effective. More importantly, it won’t damage the health of the squirrels or other pests that are on the lookout for nutrients.

Still, it’s important to keep up with the gardening tasks, ensuring that the outdoor spaces are as tidy and well-organised, without anything in sight that might attract the presence of these pests.

It doesn’t require a lot of effort, but just some extra time and patience. Plus, vinegar is a household must-have item, so you won’t be spending anything at all – unless you’ve run out of it.

These tasks don’t require a lot of knowledge but some practice. Therefore, anyone with a lot to little experience can successfully keep their gardens a safe place to spend some time outdoors.
