Stop using the toaster – toast tastes better when you use this method with 1 simple ingredient

By staff12 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Bread is a staple in most households, but there is no denying that a piece of toast can be quite bland and dry if you are simply popping it in the toaster

Toast might be the simplest food to rustle up, but it can turn out rather dry and tasteless if you’re just chucking it in a toaster.

A toaster does the job if you’re after a speedy brekkie, but toast is naturally quite boring, and you frequently have to slather on loads of butter if you want any taste whatsoever.

This leads to toast that’s incredibly waterlogged in the centre, whilst the crust remains hard and rubbery.

However, Karen, the chef behind Soup Addict, has revealed that toast is superior and boasts a much better consistency if you prepare it in a frying pan with a dash of olive oil instead, reports the Express.

She explained: “I like bread out of the toaster as much as the next person, but if you’re like me, you automatically reach for the butter or other condiments to moisten the bread. It’s just better that way. With fried toast, there’s a nice balance of crunchy texture and olive oil lusciousness.”

Preparing bread with some olive oil will make the bread crispy so you achieve a caramelised exterior rather than the crumbly toast you frequently get with a toaster.

The toast becomes more solid, which makes it simpler to support toppings without them slipping off or crumbling apart.

Karen continued: “Bread fried in olive oil becomes very, very sturdy, but not in the teeth-cracking way that you associate with, say, a crusty French baguette. The bread is crunchy… but tender. And it holds the weight.”

Olive oil also enhances the toast’s flavour as it blends with the bread whilst it cooks, making it more luxurious without having to smother it in butter. This is a dead simple recipe, but it really elevates your toast and turns it into a proper breakfast delight rather than just a quick bite in the morning.

Here’s how to take your toast to the next level.

You will need:

  • One slice of hearty thick bread
  • One teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil
  • A 20cm frying pan

Method:

Start by heating up your frying pan on medium-high heat. You’ll know it’s hot enough when a few drops of water sizzle and dance across the surface.

Next, drizzle olive oil in zigzags over one side of the bread. You only need a smidge, just enough to give the bread a nice crispy crust.

Place the bread in the centre of the pan, with the olive-oil side down. Let it sizzle away for two to three minutes, keeping an eye on it with a spatula.

Keep lettuce fresh for 10 days longer by storing it with 1 item

Once the edges start to char, flip it over straight away. When the second side is golden brown, pop the bread onto a plate and let it cool off a bit.

Finish it off with a sprinkle of salt, pile on your favourite toppings and voila!

Your toast is now richer, crunchier and ready to be devoured.
