Storm Eowyn has been battering the UK on Friday, and both of Glasgow’s iconic Old Firm stadiums have been hit, with Celtic saying their match on Saturday is under threat
Celtic say Saturday’s Scottish Premiership match against Dundee is under threat after Storm Eowyn caused damage to Parkhead, while Rangers’ Ibrox stadium has also seen part of its roof ripped off.
Storm Eowyn has been battering the UK throughout Friday, with Scotland particularly affected. The Scottish government say 100,000 homes have been left without power due to the high winds.
A gust of 102mph was recorded on the Tay Road Bridge in Dundee, while winds reached 101mph in Drumalbin in South Lanarkshire.
Glasgow has also been hit hard by the storm, and the city’s two famous club football stadiums have both been damaged in the conditions.
Celtic put out a statement on Friday saying that they will assess the damage to Parkhead following the storm, adding that they are unable to confirm whether the Dundee fixture – which is scheduled to kick off at 3pm on Saturday – will be able to go ahead.
“Unfortunately today’s severe weather conditions have caused some damage at Celtic Park,” said the club. “Our stadium and safety staff are currently unable to fully assess the extent of the damage due to the ongoing extreme conditions.
“In light of this and in order that we communicate fully and openly with our fans, in the interests of supporter safety, we are unable to confirm at this stage whether the match tomorrow between Celtic and Dundee (Jan 25) will be able to proceed. Of course, we will be doing all we can to ensure that it does.
“A full assessment and decision will be made as early as possible tomorrow morning (Saturday) and we will update our supporters as soon as we can. We thank our supporters sincerely for their understanding.”
Meanwhile footage has emerged of the storm taking off part of the roof of Ibrox, Rangers’ home ground, as the high winds battered Glasgow.
Rangers, who lost 2-1 to Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday, are scheduled to travel to Dundee United on Sunday for a 12pm kick-off.
