As the summer season looms, Brit families are on the lookout for the perfect holiday spot. Camping is a budget-friendly choice with an abundance of sites to pick from. One campsite that consistently pulls in families is Shell Island in North Wales. This massive 450-acre Gwynedd site, with 300 acres dedicated to camping, is thought to be the UK’s largest campsite, offering 800 pitches.

Its unique location on North Cardigan Bay, within Snowdonia National Park, draws families from all over. While some visitors pop in for day trips to partake in activities like fishing, crabbing, and boating, many opt to holiday here, especially during the summer months.

It can get crowded, so it’s advisable to book online in advance. Pitches aren’t pre-allocated, allowing you to roam and set up camp wherever you fancy.

You have the option to pitch next to the beach, hidden amongst the trees, or nearer to the facilities. Most amenities are conveniently situated in the heart of the island, behind the leisure complex, according to the Manchester Evening News, reports the Liverpool Echo.

For those seeking a budget-friendly getaway, camping remains the most cost-effective option. During the peak summer months of July and August, adults can enjoy a night’s stay for just £13, while it’s only £6.50 for children aged between three and fifteen.

However, during busier times such as bank holidays, guests may need to book a minimum of two or three nights. For those who fancy a bit of glamping, beach chalets and flats that sleep up to six are on offer as an alternative to pitching a tent.

Just a short two-and-a-half-hour drive from Liverpool, the site has been winning over guests, racking up a load of thumbs-up reviews.

A previous visitor shared their delight on Facebook: “I haven’t been in many years, thoroughly enjoyed the stay, everything you need on site.”

Another keen holidaymaker expressed their joy online: “When the weather’s good this place is unreal, you could be abroad with Snowdonia overlooking the sea. Always a favourite to return to.”

With a handsome 3.9 out of 5 rating on Tripadvisor, one contented visitor dubbed it a ‘camping paradise’: “Fantastic location, great staff and value for money.

“Nowhere better for a sundowner on the beach and often dolphins in the morning passing by.”

Other reviews highlighted the British charm: “On the UK coast so can be windy and the usual weather but only adds to the charm. Many visits with the kids as children and now as adults. Love it.”

The sandy dunes and harbour add to the appeal, providing ample opportunity for adventure, while cosy dining experiences await at the onsite restaurant, snack bar, or the Tavern Bar – conveniently placed next to a playground to keep an eye on the youngsters.

Shell Island, true to its name, is a haven for shell collectors with around 200 different types washing up on its beaches, particularly between January and June.

Dogs are more than welcome here, although there are some restrictions in areas such as the snack bar or pub. The site boasts family-friendly toilet facilities, complete with a spacious family unit, baby baths and changing units. The showers also come with a changing area and a seat for convenience.

Ladies can enjoy a large make-up/hair room within the shower facilities, equipped with separate mirrors and plugs. Both the ladies’ and men’s showers offer two complimentary hairdryers.

Youngsters will be thrilled with the Children’s Play Park situated outside the bar and snack bar area, right next to a Games Room packed with pool tables and other fun activities.

While caravans are not allowed, motorhomes and campervans are welcomed. Llanbedr train station is conveniently located just a 30-minute stroll away.
