The Scottish location has the lowest average house price of any seaside town in the UK, according to Rightmove, and has stunning coastal scenery with golden sandy beaches
In a quaint Scottish village known for its friendly locals, cosy pubs and scenic seaside walks, a two-bedroom coastal retreat is up for grabs at an incredibly reasonable price.
The property, which would be the dream of any millennial to own, even comes with a garden and all for a mere £62,000 as listed on Rightmove. This isn’t an anomaly – Saltcoats in Scotland boasts the lowest average house price of all UK seaside towns at just £114,365.
But don’t let the price fool you as it’s far more luxurious than you might imagine. Nestled on the breathtaking coastline of Irvine Bay, southwest of Glasgow, Saltcoats offers golden sandy beaches, a stunning coastline and Victorian architecture, making it a favourite spot for walkers and cyclists.
The town’s name harks back to its earliest industry – salt harvesting – and a picturesque harbour dating back to the 17th century stands testament to its once bustling port, where fossilised trees can be seen at low tide. It’s significantly below the national average house price of £373,493, which is more than 10 times the average UK yearly wage of £35,464, according to government data published in October.
One local resident shared their weather photos from Saltcoats, captioning them: “I sometimes put my pictures into the BBC weather page, but they never get picked. So just for you, here’s some weather from Saltcoats this afternoon. Was lovely.”
According to Rightmove, the 10 cheapest seaside towns for buying a house are all located in the north of the UK, with the most expensive of the 10 averaging £146,674 in Hartlepool, County Durham, reports the Express. County Durham is represented three times on the list, with Easington and Peterlee securing the second and third cheapest spots.
Ashington in Northumberland follows with an average price of £132,660. Over in the North West, Bootle in Merseyside boasts an average house price of just £133,197, while Maryport and Workington in Cumbria hover around the £141,000 mark.
Representing the Midlands, Grimsby and Girvan in Lincolnshire both made the cut with an average price of £135,951. As expected, the 10 costliest seaside locations were in the south of the England, with Sandbanks in Dorset clinching the top spot at an average price of a whopping £1.58 million.
