Are you dreaming of the perfect salty fish and chips with a side of tangy tartare sauce? This stunning UK village boasts the country’s ‘best-rated’ chipper alongside breath taking views
Fish and chips are easily one of Britain’s greatest delicacies and it’s not hard to see why. With their rich battered fish, thick fluffy chips and salty vinegar tang, they’re irresistible. Even better? The UK’s top-rated chip shop also happens to be in a gorgeous seaside village.
Cornwall is one of the UK’s most beautiful regions. Not only does it boast long stretches of coastline, its southern position means it often gets the best of Britain’s inconsistent weather. Unsurprisingly it’s an incredibly popular destination for both Brits looking to staycation, as well as those wishing to see the best England has to offer. In fact, its visitor economy generates a shocking £2 billion each year.
However, with so many beautiful towns, like the famous St Ives, it can be hard to know where to go. Fortunately, foodies can make a beeline to Porthtowan, which is home to Time Out’s number one fish and chip shop. Set on the Cornish coast, Seasmiths offers staples like cod, haddock and mushy peas. They also sell delicious dips like the traditional tartare sauce and even katsu curry – as well as the classics like ketchup and mayo.
Time Out writes: “But the offering from this family-run joint is simple: perfectly cooked, sustainably sourced cod or haddock, on a bed of undeniably crispy, never soggy, thick-cut chips, always served with a wedge of lemon and a sprig of parsley.” What makes it stand out is that there are no big queues. The shop operates on a click and collect basis, which means you can order online before you even walk in.
One TripAdvisor review reads: “So delicious, really good food. Cooked to perfection! The portions were large and the chips were golden. Fish so fresh and the batter was thin, tasty and not at all greasy.”
Porthtowan also has a lot of other great activities to offer. It is home to luxuriously sandy Porthtowan Beach, which has been heralded as one of the region’s best family-friendly spots. It has a multitude of caves and rockpools to explore, as well as great waves for surfers.
If you’re looking for slower-paced activities, you can also go for a walk around Goodrevy and marvel at the old lighthouse. Interestingly, Goodrevy Lighthouse was built in 1859 to mark a dangerous reef off St. Ives called the Stones.
You’re also in proximity to other Cornish sights like the picture-perfect town of St Agnes and the Heartland Cornish mining heritage centre in Pool. You can also visit the gorgeous nearby Trelissick, Glendurgan or Trengwainton gardens. The town offers many quiet seaside lodges for those looking for a peaceful retreat. Rooms go from £77 per night, making it a relatively affordable trip.
