Subway launches new items that aren’t sandwiches but some fans aren’t impressed

Subway is loved for its variety of sandwiches with various fillings and it’s just added a new range of items to its menu that don’t involve any bread – but fans have been left divided

Subway is a major franchise known for its sandwiches and wraps, but it’s now added new items to its menu away from its specialty bread creations. It’s not a secret that Brits love sandwiches, but potatoes are also a popular food choice for many people from the UK because of their versatility and affordability.

The fast food restaurant company has taken note of this by releasing a permanent range of jacket potatoes, playfully named ‘Spudway’, filled with various meat and vegetarian toppings. This comes after it trialled the fluffy baked potatoes in more than 170 UK stores from February 19 to April 15 and received positive reactions from customers.

Subway recognised that the humble jacket potato has found fame on social media over the last few years with viral videos including debates on the perfect combination of toppings.

It’s now offering customers the chance to enjoy their favourite subs on a spud with classic fillings like baked beans and cheese and tuna mayo, as well as chicken tikka and the brand’s famous Meatball Marinara.

The social media page New Foods UK, known for finding the latest foods and treats since 2017, shared a post on Instagram showing some items in the new jacket potato selection, including Philly Steak and Cheese, Ham and Cheese, the Big Breakwich and Rotisserie-Style Chicken and Cheese.

The new has garnered more thousands of likes and comments from Subway fans on social media. Over on Subway UK’s own Instagram, one person said: “Clutching at straws now! Can only imagine the price of it.”

Another added: “Who is going out to subway and getting a jacket potato (and paying subway prices) please be so real. More money than sense.”

A third commented: “How to take a healthy baked potato and make it American.” However, on another post on Instagram by Subway announcing the launch of ‘Spudway’ some fans were more positive.

Someone remarked: “This is too exciting.” A second exclaimed: “Love this!” A customer who has already sampled the new range chimed in: “I prepared the potatoes yesterday already for today. They are really tasty.”

The Classic Jacket Potatoes cost £7.20 to £8.70 depending on the specific item and the Special Jacket Potatoes range from £8.05 to £8.90.

A survey by Subway of 2,000 UK adults revealed that 94 per cent of Brits admit to eating a jacket potato once a week, consuming over 8,000 potatoes in a lifetime.

Cathy Goodwin, Interim Director of Culinary and Innovation at Subway EMEA, said: “The nation’s love of jacket Potatoes is unparalleled. The enthusiasm we’ve seen on social media and the strong demand from our guests throughout the trial made it clear that Spudway™ deserved a permanent place on our menu.

“Made with British potatoes, Irish salted butter, a double portion of cheese, and fully customisable with any of our many toppings – from our iconic Meatball Marinara to spud staples like Cheese and Beans, Spudway™ is the perfect freshly-made, high-quality lunch choice.”

Subway has been approached for comment.
