Subway permanently adds jacket potatoes to UK menu after ‘mash-hit’ trial

By staff3 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Food chain Subway is launching a new range of jacket potatoes stuffed with a variety of toppings that’s bound to delight any potato-obsessed fan

Subway's new 'Spudway'
Spuds have officially been added to the menu

Subway is set to roll out jacket potatoes across the nation following a a ‘mash-hit’ trial. The new menu item, cheekily named ‘Spudway’, will feature fluffy baked potatoes topped with a variety of fillings including cheese and baked beans, tuna mayo, Meatball Marinara, and chicken tikka.

This decision comes after a survey of 2,000 adults revealed that they’ll consume more than 8,000 baked potatoes during their lifetime, with a quarter confessing they’d eat one every day if possible. Cheese and beans emerged as the most popular topping (56 per cent), followed by tuna mayonnaise (36 per cent) and bacon (23 per cent).

Cathy Goodwin, interim director of culinary & innovation Subway EMEA, said: The nation’s love of Jacket Potatoes is unparalleled.

“The enthusiasm we’ve seen on social media and the strong demand from our guests throughout the trial made it clear that Spudway deserved a permanent place on our menu.”

The study also found that 15 per cent are obsessed with the dish, with 23 per cent admitting they would ‘be likely’ to have one for breakfast. Interestingly, one in 10 prefer ketchup on their spuds, while 40 per cent enjoy experimenting with different toppings from time to time.

For 23 per cent, their passion for the humble spud has even led to arguments or disagreements about what makes the perfect jacket potato.

A whopping 41 per cent believe the dish isn’t complete without baked beans, while 19 per cent would be ‘disgusted’ if someone microwaved their spud instead of baking it in the oven.

A surprising 21 per cent of people secretly judge others based on their choice of topping or filling, while a whopping 34 per cent find eating a cold one to be their ‘biggest ick.’

Interestingly, 78 per cent of people typically eat the skin of their jacket potato rather than leaving it.

Among those who participated in the study, 15 per cent believe that jacket potato season officially kicks off on 1 September.

Cathy added: “Made with British potatoes, Irish salted butter, a double portion of cheese, and fully customisable with any of our many toppings – from our iconic Meatball Marinara to spud staples like Cheese & Beans.”
