BURNLEY 0-0 SUNDERLAND: Wilson Isidor should have handed the Black Cats victory in the top of the table Championship clash at Turf Moor, but ended the night in tears after seeing James Trafford save two late penalties
James Trafford came to Burnley’s rescue saving TWO penalties in an incredible finale which left Sunderland ’s Wilson Isidor in tears.
The England wannabe was the spot kick saviour as the home side wobbled and looked like surrendering their unbeaten Turf Moor record this season.
Isidor was put on the spot after he was clipped in the area in the 85th minute – Burnley complained it was outside – by CJ Egan-Riley, but Trafford dived to his right to keep the Frenchman’s penalty out.
Then in added time it was Groundhog day as Trafford saved another Isidor spot kick after Oliver Sonne was adjudged to have brought Dennis Cirkin down. The Burnley keeper again took the right option again leaping to his right to leave Isidor in bits.
Relieved Burnley boss Scott Parker admitted: “They were two incredible saves. We understand we have a great talent on our hands. He has definitely earned us a point. And this could be massive for us. It’s not as if they were bad penalties.”
Trafford added: “This feels like a win in the end. But take away the two penalties we had the better chances to win the game.”
They have still conceded just nine goals but for the Burnley mean machine it’s the lack of goals at the other end which is the problem. It meant that the chance to go top for the first time since October 19th with a win was missed. Last night they wouldn’t have cared less as Trafford rose to the occasion.
Sunderland had played without fear against a Burnley mean machine proving that they can have a big say in the automatic promotion shake up.
Ironcially in front of watching England assistant boss Anthony Barry, Trafford called up to the last Three Lions squad, had ironically suffered a meltdown which almost cost his side an early goal.
Racing out of his area to try and clear a long punt from Chris Rigg a glaring misjudgement left him in no man’s land with fall guy Isidor ready to pounce only for Maxime Esteve scramble the ball to safety.
At the other end another bright English goalkeeping talent Anthony Patterson brilliantly turned a blistering Jaidon Anthony drive around the post.
Sunderland’s new boy Enzo Le Fee on loan from Roma provided Isidor with what should have been the opening goal, a 47th minute lacerating through ball sending Isidor clean through only for the French striker to slash wide.
Sadly it’s a night he will want to forget while Trafford will be snapping up the DVD!
